TNA iMPACT ended on an ominous note this week as X-Division Champion Cedric Alexander was discovered unconscious backstage following an apparent attack.
The disturbing scene unfolded in the closing moments of the August 20 edition of iMPACT. After the night's main event had concluded, the focus suddenly shifted away from the celebration inside the ring and toward the backstage area, where Alexander was seen laid out on the floor.
No attacker was shown, leaving another major mystery hanging over the TNA roster.
The incident followed a chaotic eight-man tag team main event featuring The Hardys, Moose and Elijah against AJ Francis, Frankie Kazarian and The Nemeths.
The bout served as a preview of several rivalries heading into TNA Lockdown, with Jeff Hardy ultimately securing the victory for his team.
However, the celebrations did not last long.
As The Hardys and their partners enjoyed their win, the broadcast abruptly cut backstage. Alexander was shown motionless on the floor, with no immediate indication of who had attacked the reigning X-Division Champion or why he had been targeted.
The development bears a striking resemblance to an incident involving Moose just one week earlier.
During the August 13 edition of TNA iMPACT, Moose was similarly discovered backstage after apparently being assaulted by an unidentified individual. Despite the attack, Moose recovered sufficiently to compete in this week's eight-man tag team main event.
Alexander becoming another apparent victim could signal that a larger storyline is developing, although TNA has yet to officially establish that the two incidents are connected.
The timing also creates another question heading into TNA Lockdown. Alexander is currently scheduled to defend the X-Division Championship against Leon Slater inside a Steel Cage at the upcoming event.
There has been no indication yet as to whether the attack will affect Alexander's participation in that championship match.
TNA has also offered no confirmation regarding the identity of either attacker, or whether one person was responsible for both incidents. With two members of the roster now suffering mysterious backstage attacks in consecutive weeks, however, speculation over who might be responsible is likely to intensify.
