Adam Copeland has built a career around taking chances inside the ring, and one of the biggest risks of his career came at AEW Double or Nothing 2024.
At 50 years old, Copeland climbed to the top of the steel cage during his Barbed Wire Steel Cage Match against Malakai Black before launching himself from the structure and crashing down onto his opponent.
The spectacular moment came at a significant cost. Copeland fractured his tibia during the landing, an injury that required surgery and ultimately kept him out of action for approximately seven months.
Despite the lengthy recovery and the lasting effects of the injury, Copeland insists he does not look back on the decision with regret.
During an appearance on The Ariel Helwani Show, the WWE Hall of Famer was asked whether he wishes he had avoided taking such a dangerous risk.
“Nah. It’s part of it. You don’t expect to walk out of it unharmed. More than anything, I feel like that one has lingered with me. That injury in particular, I feel it every once in a while. I’ll go to take a step and the leg will just give. ‘Okay, right, there is a plate and screws in there.’ I have to keep track of that. It’s also the same leg that I tore the Achilles. It reminds me, but I don’t regret it. It’s all part of the process. When I got up there and looked down, I was like, ‘These cages are higher, I think.’ They were [laughs].”
The injury also brought Copeland's reign as AEW TNT Champion to an abrupt conclusion. With the veteran unable to compete, the championship was vacated following Double or Nothing.
Copeland has since returned to the ring and once again finds himself holding championship gold in AEW. He currently reigns as one-half of the AEW World Tag Team Champions alongside longtime friend and rival Christian Cage.
Although the cage dive left Copeland with a plate and screws in his leg and occasional reminders of just how serious the injury was, he continues to view the moment as part of the risks that come with his profession.
