NJPW is preparing to introduce another fresh face to its roster, with Young Lion Yushin Hatazawa officially set to make his in-ring debut next month.
The 20-year-old prospect will step into an NJPW ring for the first time on September 9 at Korakuen Hall during the Road to Destruction tour. Hatazawa will face fellow Young Lion Tatsuya Matsumoto, who has already built up more than a year of experience after beginning his NJPW career in the summer of 2025.
Hatazawa's journey to the Noge Dojo began well before he passed NJPW's tryouts in 2024. Originally from Hakodate, Hokkaido, he took up sumo during high school specifically with the ambition of eventually pursuing professional wrestling.
NJPW provided more background on its latest prospect:
"20 year old Hatazawa fights out of the northern climes of Hakodate in Hokkaido. With a view to getting into pro-wrestling, Hatazawa started sumo in high school, managing to compete at the national level. After graduating from high school, Hatazawa found employment while preparing himself to join New Japan. He passed tryouts in 2024, and officially joined the Noge Dojo in April of 2025."
His Korakuen Hall appearance will only be the beginning. Hatazawa is scheduled to remain active throughout the Road to Destruction tour as he begins gaining experience in front of NJPW crowds.
One notable date comes on September 15 when Hatazawa gets the opportunity to compete in his home prefecture of Hokkaido. For his first announced tag team match, the newcomer will join forces with Master Wato to take on Shun Skywalker and Dick Togo.
As with other NJPW Young Lions, Hatazawa is expected to spend the early stages of his career concentrating on fundamentals and working a stripped-back wrestling style. The Young Lion system traditionally sees trainees gradually build their experience before potentially heading overseas on excursion.
Those excursions have played an important role in the development of generations of NJPW talent, allowing wrestlers to establish their own characters and styles before eventually returning to Japan as more complete performers.
Wins are also traditionally difficult to come by during the earliest stages of a Young Lion's career, particularly when facing established members of the roster. Matches against other developing Young Lions can provide the first opportunities to begin picking up victories.
