WNS Column: Alberto Del Rio - A Modern Conqueror

 

Alberto Del Rio is a truly bright star in the WWE Universe. A successful former amateur wrestler and Luchador in Mexico, as well as a fairly successful mixed martial arts fighter, Alberto Del Rio has all of the physical tools needed to excel in World Wrestling Entertainment. However, it is a proven fact that physical abilities can only go so far. In order to be a truly great WWE Superstar, one also needs to have a certain "it" factor. Good charisma, decent character acting abilities, and above all else: confidence in one's self and one's abilities. Alberto Del Rio certainly appears to possess all of these traits.

 

Allegedly a direct descendant of Spanish Royalty, King Ferdinand & Queen Isabella, greatness is in Alberto Del Rio's bloodline. Del Rio also comes from an incredible Lucha Libre family. His uncle is the iconic Mil Máscaras, and Alberto's father is the legendary Luchador, Dos Caras. Alberto was formerly known as "Dos Caras Jr." both in Mexican Lucha Libre and throughout his MMA fighting career. One could say that Alberto Del Rio was truly destined for greatness, even before he was born.

 

Alberto Del Rio also carries on the legacy of Rey Mysterio, the late Eddie Guerrero, Chavo Guerrero Jr., and other successful Hispanic competitors that have come before him in WWE. Del Rio, Mysterio, and Los Guerreros are the only four Hispanic World Champions in WWE history. Alberto Del Rio is now a two-time WWE Champion, Rey Mysterio is a former three-time WWE World Champion, Eddie Guerrero held the WWE Championship in 2004, and Chavo Guerrero Jr. held the WWE Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW) World Championship in 2008.

 

But Alberto Del Rio must not be solely compared to other Hispanic Champions, or anyone else for that matter. Alberto Del Rio is his own man, forming his own unique legacy. Alberto Del Rio has brought a unique and fascinating persona into the WWE Universe. Del Rio has all of the fame, fortune, and power that one could ever wish for, yet Del Rio craves something more. Something special. Alberto Del Rio wants to achieve true greatness. Alberto Del Rio is looking to prove himself as one of the greatest WWE Superstars and one of the greatest WWE Champions of all time. And he has proven that he has the tools and the abilities to do so.

 

Alberto Del Rio has waged war against many of WWE's top Superstars, such as: Rey Mysterio, John Cena, C.M. Punk, Christian Cage, "The Big Show" Paul Wight, and "The Rated-R Superstar" Edge, who had his very last pro wrestling match ever against Alberto Del Rio at WrestleMania 27. And more often than not, Del Rio has been successful in his bouts against these established WWE veterans.

 

Alberto Del Rio, despite his handsome features, has also shown that he has an extremely vicious streak in him. Using his incredible speed, agility, and nearly flawless technique, Alberto Del Rio, quite simply, is hard to beat. Standing an impressive 6'5", Del Rio is deceptively athletic for a man of his stature. He is also an extremely well-trained and purely dangerous competitor, unleashing his grappling and striking mixed martial arts skills on his opponents. Alberto Del Rio's legitimate background also brings credibility to WWE and the prestigious WWE Championship.

 

In conclusion, Alberto Del Rio has an extremely bright future ahead of him, as long as he can continue to avoid injury and continue to live a clean-and-sober lifestyle. Injuries and/or suspensions never result in good things for a WWE Superstar, but it would appear as though Alberto Del Rio is a model WWE employee. With his unique persona and incredible physical abilities, there is no reason why Alberto Del Rio cannot conquer the WWE Universe and achieve legendary status as one of the greatest WWE Champions of all time.
