David Morales has gone from playing a villainous politician in wrestling to winning a real election, becoming the next mayor of Providence, Rhode Island.
The 28-year-old Democrat defeated Republican Dave Talan in Tuesday’s mayoral race with approximately 81% of the vote. He is set to take office in January.
Wrestling fans in Rhode Island may recognise Morales as “The Commissioner”, a character he has portrayed with Renegade Wrestling Alliance since 2021. He announced his semi-retirement from wrestling during his mayoral campaign.
Speaking to Ocean State Media in October 2025, Morales explained that wrestling and politics have more in common than people might expect.
“I think there’s a lot of overlap,” he said. “Including showmanship, theater, athleticism, drama and humor.”
However, Morales also expressed concern about politicians borrowing too heavily from the way wrestlers deliver their promos.
“I don’t think it’s a positive thing when so many politicians are trying to emulate the sort of style that professional wrestlers put forward in their promos, because what you end up with is extremist rhetoric,” he said.
With his election victory secured, “The Commissioner” now has a real leadership role ahead of him when he takes office in January.
