Sheamus has made it clear he is not ready to be called a former wrestler, describing his current break from the ring as “a long vacation.”
Speaking to Telemundo Deportes at the Bundesliga Haus in Chicago on Saturday, Sheamus quickly corrected an interviewer who introduced him as an “ex-luchador.”
“Did you say ex-luchador? I’m just taking time off. I’m just chilling, I’m just relaxing. I’m on vacation. A long vacation,” Sheamus said.
The former WWE star was attending a watch party for Borussia Dortmund’s match against Bayern Munich. A Dortmund supporter, he also discussed his connection to the club and backed them to win at Bayern’s Allianz Arena.
His comments come as questions continue over where he could wrestle next. Sheamus became a free agent on October 1 following the expiry of his WWE contract, marking the occasion with a simple message on X: “all challengers welcome.”
Since confirming his WWE departure in July, he has been using his real name, Stephen Farrelly, and has renamed his YouTube channel accordingly.
During a July interview with Adam’s Apple, Sheamus offered limited details about the circumstances surrounding his departure.
“Some circumstances came up. I can’t really talk about it, obviously,” Sheamus said.
However, the break has given him an opportunity to spend more time with family and friends in Ireland after almost two decades with WWE.
“19 years is a long time and a good crack, and I left Ireland in ’07,” he said. “I haven’t really had the luxury to go home and see my family and see my friends.”
“Enjoying my workouts. I feel like I’m in the best shape of my life,” he added. “I’m in a really good place.”
There has also been reported interest from outside WWE. Fightful Select reported in early October that veteran AEW wrestlers had encouraged the company to sign Sheamus, although he had not signed a deal and substantial talks had not taken place.
A further report last week stated that AEW felt no “huge urgency” to bring him in. Claudio Castagnoli and Adam Copeland were named as two wrestlers who would like to see him join the company.
TNA also reportedly approached Sheamus about appearing at Bound for Glory on October 11. According to Fightful Select, he had not committed two weeks before the event. Max Caster eventually answered Moose’s open challenge, with the report describing the two wrestlers’ rates as “vastly different.”
Sheamus built an extensive list of achievements during his WWE career, including three WWE Championship reigns, one World Heavyweight Championship reign and three United States Championship reigns. He also won King of the Ring in 2010, the Royal Rumble in 2012 and Money in the Bank in 2015.
For now, he appears happy to enjoy his time away, while leaving the door open for another chapter in wrestling.
