Shawn Michaels has opened up about the challenge of keeping NXT’s stories on track when WWE’s main roster comes calling unexpectedly.
Speaking on Busted Open Radio, Michaels explained that sudden moves to Raw or SmackDown can leave his team adjusting plans before a storyline has reached its intended ending.
Experience has helped him recognise when a performer could be ready for a call-up. However, an injury on the main roster can create an immediate need, giving NXT little time to prepare.
“There is a part of you, I will say, after you continue doing it for a while, you will do your best to have a feeling,” Michaels said.
Advance notice makes the process easier, but that is not always possible. Sometimes, a wrestler is needed elsewhere before NXT can wrap up their story or give them a farewell match.
“And you don’t get an opportunity to finish up a storyline or something of that nature,” he explained.
Michaels said NXT has become more comfortable addressing those moves on television, helping viewers understand why a familiar face is no longer appearing. Behind the scenes, his team also needs another direction ready to go.
“We also have to have a backup plan when it does happen,” Michaels stated.
Although those changes can make for a difficult day at work, Michaels still enjoys the challenge of finding a way forward.
“Look, we find ourselves scrambling a lot, but that’s the joy of it. It’s tough sometimes, but also exciting because it keeps you on your toes.”
Preparing talent for WWE’s main roster remains central to NXT’s role. For Michaels and his team, that means being ready to turn the page sooner than expected, even when there is unfinished business.
