Penta’s Money in the Bank victory reportedly followed a change in WWE’s plans, with his performance against Roman Reigns in Mexico City helping him secure the opportunity.
According to JoeyVotes and TC of WrestleVotes, Penta was not expected to be in that position just a month before the event. His showing on the Mexico City edition of RAW appears to have made a strong impression on those behind the scenes.
Speaking during a recent Q&A, JoeyVotes explained that Penta became a creative favourite following that match.
“A lot of plans changed post-Mexico City. He was the creative favorite. Those within thought Penta was going to win that match. Three weeks later, he ended up winning it. So he did a lot of good for himself at Mexico City. Don’t know if that’s gonna translate into him winning the title eventually, but he wasn’t supposed to be in this spot a month ago.”
TC backed up the claim that Penta had not originally been lined up for the spot, adding:
“He definitely wasn’t.”
The report suggests Penta’s performance against Reigns played a significant role in his rise to Money in the Bank winner. Within a matter of weeks, he went from reportedly being outside those plans to holding a guaranteed world title opportunity.
Whether that leads to a successful cash-in remains to be seen. JoeyVotes did not confirm any plans for Penta to become world champion, but the briefcase gives him a major opportunity in the months ahead.
