Drew McIntyre Shares Ring Training Update After Five Months Away

Drew McIntyre has shared a fresh look at his preparations for a wrestling comeback, posting footage of himself training in the ring after five months away from WWE action.

The former Undisputed WWE Champion uploaded a short video to X on Friday showing himself running the ropes. His caption was just one word: “Reps.”

McIntyre last competed on April 18, losing to Jacob Fatu in an Unsanctioned Match at WrestleMania 42 in Las Vegas. While his latest update has sparked interest in a possible return, WWE has not announced when he will be back.

Much of McIntyre’s time away has been spent pursuing acting projects. According to WrestleTalk, he finished filming his role in the Highlander reboot starring Henry Cavill in June. He then worked on The Last Druid, an action film starring Russell Crowe that was filmed in Spain. Fightful reported that both films are expected to arrive in 2027.

PWInsider Elite reported in August that McIntyre had returned to the United States following filming, although there had been no discussions at that stage about bringing him back into WWE storylines. He was also working on other projects for WWE, including a lead acting role.

Despite the busy schedule, McIntyre appears eager to wrestle again. Speaking during a Fightful Select Q&A earlier this month, Sean Ross Sapp recalled meeting him at a Pro Wrestling Symphony show in Nashville.

“He said that he really missed wrestling and he really wished that he could have worked a South American tour. He said that he enjoyed those. He’s not really used to being off this long, but he’s been working on, like several movies since WrestleMania,” Sapp said.

“He’s still working out in the ring. He looks great, looks huge, talked about how a lot of the work that he’s been doing has been working on basically joint space in his body and stuff like that. But he didn’t give me a timetable or a return date or anything like that.”

Before stepping away, McIntyre had been involved in two major rivalries on SmackDown. He defeated Cody Rhodes for the Undisputed WWE Championship in a Three Stages of Hell match in Berlin on January 9, escaping the cage after Fatu returned and attacked both men.

Rhodes regained the championship on March 6 in a match ordered by Nick Aldis after McIntyre cost him his opportunity to win the Elimination Chamber. McIntyre then turned his attention to Fatu, who blamed him for the October 2025 backstage attack that had kept him out for several months. McIntyre denied responsibility, with their feud eventually leading to WrestleMania.

His training update comes ahead of Money in the Bank on October 10 at the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans. A return at the event remains speculation, with no confirmed timetable for his comeback.

McIntyre has unfinished business with the event’s famous briefcase. In 2024, he won the men’s ladder match in Toronto and cashed in later that night during Damian Priest’s World Heavyweight Championship defence against Seth Rollins. CM Punk ruined his opportunity by attacking him with a steel chair and the championship belt, allowing Priest to pin McIntyre and retain.

Bron Breakker, Je’Von Evans, United States Champion Trick Williams and Penta have qualified for this year’s men’s ladder match. Punk, Gunther and Finn Bálor are scheduled to compete for another place in a triple threat on the September 25 episode of SmackDown in Indianapolis. Williams is also set to defend his United States Championship against Baron Corbin inside a Steel Cage.
