Bret Hart has recalled watching Bill Goldberg suffer a serious arm injury during a WCW Thunder segment, describing how the car stunt went wrong just days after their Starrcade 1999 match.

Speaking to Inside The Ropes, the WWE Hall of Famer also discussed his own condition following Starrcade, claiming Goldberg did not apologise when they returned for the next television tapings.

“I went to the next day of TV tapings, which was in another town about 120 miles from Baltimore, and Bill Goldberg never once apologized [for hurting Bret at Starrcade] or said sorry about that or nothing.”

Hart said he arrived at the building concerned about a possible concussion and significant neck pain.

“I get to the building and I’m telling them, I think I have a concussion. And then, at the same time, my neck was so sore.”

Reflecting on his mindset at the time, Hart recalled reassuring himself that he was fine despite knowing something was wrong. He felt he should have been given the night off, but was instead booked against Chris Benoit.

“I didn’t want to work. I thought I should have had the day off, but they put me in a match.”

Hart explained that Benoit’s physical style made the match particularly difficult given how he was feeling. The planned angle then saw Goldberg interfere, prompting Hart to flee the ring and run out of the building.

“And Goldberg gets into it with Benoit and then comes and starts to chase me, chase after me to get me. And I run out, and they’re filming all this.”

Hart climbed into a brand new Lincoln Continental, where the next part of the segment called for Goldberg to attack the car. According to Hart, Goldberg was carrying a small metal tool designed to help shatter glass.

From inside the vehicle, Hart watched Goldberg repeatedly strike the window before attempting to put his hand through the windscreen.

“And I remember Bill punching my window three or four times, and then, like an idiot, he tries to put his hand through the windshield.”

Hart said the broken glass left Goldberg with a deep cut to his arm.

“And all of a sudden, he cut his arm from here all the way like filet mignon cut. Like, I could see the inside of his arm. It was like a nasty cut, and he hurt himself.”

Hart followed that recollection with a blunt assessment: “Idiot.”

He also remembered Goldberg’s reaction upon seeing the wound.

“And he turned white as a ghost. He almost fainted.”

Hart continued with the planned getaway, driving away as the cameras captured the segment. However, he said Goldberg needed urgent attention behind the scenes.

“But in fact, Bill just disappeared after I saw that. He was gone. Like, he just went back to the dressing room. They rushed him to the ambulance because he could have bled to death.”
