El Grande Americano captured the AAA Mega Championship at Triplemania 34 night two, defeating Dominik Mysterio in a chaotic main event that ended with Rey Mysterio counting the deciding pinfall.
The victory brought Dominik’s reign to an end after just over a year, despite interference from Omos, Dorian Roldan and Judgment Day members JD McDonagh and Liv Morgan.
Morgan’s distraction gave Dominik an opening to hit a 619 and frog splash, but Americano kicked out. The challenger then accidentally knocked down the referee, allowing Morgan to hand Dominik the championship belt.
Dominik struck Americano with the title before attempting another frog splash. Americano moved out of the way and delivered a second running headbutt, but the referee was still unable to make the count.
Rey Mysterio then arrived wearing a neck brace following the assault he suffered on the opening night of Triplemania 34. With Dominik down, Rey entered the ring and counted to three, bringing his son’s title reign to a dramatic conclusion.
Americano celebrated with the championship as a mariachi band played Cielito Lindo to close the show.
His journey to the title began in March, when he won the Rey de Reyes tournament to secure a championship opportunity. After defeating the Original El Grande Americano, Chad Gable, in May, he turned his attention to Dominik.
The pair had been allies until Dominik betrayed Americano at Verano de Escandalo in July, joining forces with Roldan and Omos. At Triplemania 34, Americano finally got his revenge and left with AAA’s top prize.
