WWE reportedly has two major title rivalries in reserve for CM Punk, with matches against Cody Rhodes and Randy Orton being saved for bigger events.

According to Dave Meltzer on Tuesday’s Wrestling Observer Radio, keeping Rhodes and Orton focused on each other allows WWE to hold off on bringing either man into the Undisputed WWE Championship picture.

The report also notes that Rhodes and Orton wanted to work together again, giving WWE another reason to continue their rivalry while Punk faces other challengers.

Sami Zayn is scheduled to challenge Punk for the championship on this week’s SmackDown in Mexico. Meltzer also mentioned Gunther as a possible opponent during this period, although that match has not been confirmed. Kevin Owens and Johnny Gargano have already challenged Punk during his reign.

There is plenty of unfinished business between Rhodes and Orton. At WrestleMania 42 on April 18, Rhodes retained the championship against Orton, only to be attacked with a Punt Kick after the match.

Orton then returned at SummerSlam on August 2 and cost Rhodes dearly. He interrupted Rhodes’ title defence against Punk with an RKO, allowing Punk to follow up with a GTS and take the championship.

Their rivalry continued at Sunday Night’s Main Event on September 6, where Orton took advantage of Rhodes’ hesitation to land a low blow and an RKO for the victory.

For now, the reported plan gives Punk fresh challengers while keeping two high-profile matches available for later. No specific event or date has been reported for either potential title showdown.
