Rey Fenix has finally accepted Ricky Saints’ challenge for the AAA World Cruiserweight Championship following weeks of heated exchanges on WWE SmackDown.

The championship match will take place on September 11, giving Saints the opportunity he has repeatedly demanded.

Their rivalry began on August 7 when Saints confronted Fenix and warned him to stop focusing on Roman Reigns and the World Title. Saints claimed the champion should instead be concerned about a “real wrestler” coming after his Cruiserweight Championship.

Saints continued to provoke Fenix on August 21 while the champion was talking with Fraxiom. He argued that SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis would have already awarded him a title match if Fenix had not entered the World Title tournament.

Fenix offered a short response to his rival.

“You talk too much.”

The tension increased on August 28 when Saints interrupted another interview with Fenix. Saints predicted that Fenix would lose his match against Penta before returning to SmackDown “with his tail between his legs.”

He also accused the Cruiserweight Champion of avoiding him.

Fenix fired back by telling Saints he “doesn’t have what it takes to be a Champion.”

On the September 4 episode of SmackDown, Fenix finally accepted the challenge and agreed to defend his title against Saints. The decision means their weeks of trash talk will now be settled inside the ring.

Fenix has remained a fighting champion since defeating Laredo Kid for the title. He has defended the championship across SmackDown, NXT and AAA, facing opponents including Axiom, JD McDonagh and EK Prosper.

The upcoming defence follows Fenix’s emotional battle against his brother Penta in the final of the World Heavyweight Championship No. 1 Contender tournament on August 31.

Penta won the match and earned the right to challenge Roman Reigns in Mexico City on September 14.

Fenix must now turn his attention to Saints, who finally has the championship opportunity he wanted.
