Mark Henry Defends Nepotism in Wrestling and Names WWE Stars Who Benefited

Posted By: Ben Kerin on Sep 02, 2026

WWE Hall of Famer Mark Henry believes having a famous wrestling name can be a major advantage when breaking into the business, and he does not see nepotism as necessarily being a bad thing.

Speaking to ClutchPoints ahead of AEW All In, Henry discussed the long-running debate surrounding second and third-generation wrestlers receiving opportunities because of their family connections.

For Henry, growing up in a wrestling family can give someone valuable knowledge of the industry long before they ever step inside the ring themselves.

“No, it’s good. I mean, Charlotte Flair, Randy Orton, Cody Rhodes, Dominik Mysterio. Like, you can go down the list. There are 10 or 15 wrestlers whose father or mother was involved in the industry. And when you know and understand the terminologies, and you know what the travel is gonna be like, because as a kid, you actually did some of it with your parents,” Henry revealed.

Henry believes those wrestlers can arrive with an understanding of wrestling terminology, life on the road and the expectations that come with working in the industry.

There can also be an advantage behind the scenes. People within wrestling may already know the performer's family, their reputation and the values they have been raised around, potentially making it easier to build relationships and deal with difficult situations.

Henry also brought his son, Jacob Henry, into the conversation. Should Jacob pursue professional wrestling, Henry believes carrying the family name could help him, particularly because people within the industry already know what Mark stands for.

“I think that is an advantage because people that know me know that I’m about business. I’m about the industry, how to make things better, how to increase relationships,” Henry said.

Henry believes his son has also inherited many of the values he has tried to represent throughout his career, including helping others.

“That’s what my son is. He’s a reflection of me, and he knows how sensitive I am to philanthropy, and picking up the mantle for helping people that don’t have anything. So he’s gonna do more than his share because he knows who his father is and what his father did to help the industry, and he’s gonna be a part of that,” Henry explained.

For Henry, being born into a wrestling family is about more than simply having a recognisable surname. It can mean entering the business with years of knowledge about its culture, travel demands, terminology, relationships and responsibilities.

Whether that should be considered nepotism or simply an advantage of growing up around the industry will likely remain up for debate.

Do you agree with Mark Henry? Is being born into a wrestling family an unfair advantage, or is it simply valuable experience? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
