Stephanie McMahon has shared a rather unusual piece of advice Triple H gave her moments before Shane McMahon made his memorable WWE return in 2016.
Shane returned to WWE RAW in February 2016 after being away from WWE television for around seven years. The surprise appearance received a huge reaction from fans, but Stephanie was dealing with something very different behind the scenes.
Speaking with Chris Van Vliet on her What’s Your Story? podcast, Stephanie revealed she was suffering from the flu and had spent much of the previous night and morning being sick.
“Yeah, I had the flu. Like, you can’t believe I was so sick. I had been throwing up that entire night into that morning. I had just stopped throwing up by the time I got to the building, so I was not feeling well.”
Despite feeling terrible, Stephanie knew she still had an important role to play on RAW.
“The show must go on, right? There’s nothing you can do about it.”
Stephanie was worried she could suddenly become sick again, especially while standing in the ring during what was planned to be Shane's major comeback moment.
She even warned the person doing her makeup because she did not want to make anyone else ill.
As the time to head to the ring approached, Stephanie began worrying about what would happen if she became sick during the live segment. That was when Triple H offered a very wrestling-style solution.
Stephanie recalled:
“And then my husband says to me right before we go out there, ’cause I’m starting to freak out and I’m like, ‘This is Shane’s big return. Like, what happens if I get sick out there?’ And he goes, ‘Steph, if you gotta throw up, just throw up on him.'”
Rather than making Stephanie feel even more nervous, the suggestion apparently helped put things into perspective.
“And I was like, ‘That’s great advice. All right. Yeah. Can’t go wrong if it’s live, right?’”
Thankfully for Shane, and probably everyone watching RAW that night, Stephanie managed to get through the segment without Triple H's emergency plan becoming necessary.
Shane's surprise return took place during a segment in which Stephanie was being presented with the Vincent J. McMahon Legacy of Excellence Award.
His entrance produced an enormous response from the crowd and quickly became one of the most memorable WWE returns of that period.
It eventually led to Shane facing The Undertaker inside Hell in a Cell at WrestleMania 32, including his unforgettable leap from the top of the structure.
Years later, Stephanie's story provides a very different look at what was happening behind the scenes during Shane's big comeback.
Imagine how different that famous return would have been if Stephanie had actually followed Triple H's advice!
