Brian “Road Dogg” James has claimed that his political and personal beliefs played a role in a potential opportunity with AEW falling apart.
James made the allegation during a series of posts on social media on Wednesday, with the discussion initially stemming from an exchange with Dave Meltzer regarding Austin and Colten Gunn. James had argued that the AEW World Tag Team Championships were “beneath” the Gunn brothers, which led to further discussion about his own history with the promotion.
During the exchange, the WWE Hall of Famer stated that he had previously been “turned away” by AEW, claiming his political views and core beliefs were behind the decision. James did not reveal exactly when the alleged opportunity took place.
“Actually, I was turned away because of my political/core beliefs. That happened IN AMERICA,” James wrote. “I didn’t donate to or vote for Trump, BUT his old man [Shad Khan] did, why was I punished?”
James has previously been open about wanting to work for AEW. Following his WWE departure in 2022, he publicly expressed interest in joining Tony Khan's company and said he had been seeking an opportunity there. No deal materialised, and James ultimately returned to WWE later that year.
During his latest run with WWE, James held a significant backstage position and eventually became co-lead writer for SmackDown. He departed the company earlier in 2026.
The situation took another turn when James initially accused wrestling journalist David Bixenspan of contributing to the apparent AEW opportunity being withdrawn. James alleged that screenshots of his social media activity highlighting his conservative views had been used against him.
“This is the guy that screenshot my social media Post (I am conservative) and then used it to get my opportunity canceled. I feel differently than a lot of you. Im not sorry for who I am and how I was raised.”
However, after Bixenspan indicated that he had no knowledge of what James was referring to, Road Dogg walked back the specific accusation and acknowledged that he may have identified the wrong person.
“My bad David. I guess there’s another David B out there doing this.”
James has not provided additional evidence publicly to support his broader claim that his political or personal beliefs were responsible for AEW deciding against working with him. AEW has also not publicly commented on the allegation.
James has also been linked with a possible move to TNA Wrestling following his WWE departure.
Earlier reports suggested that discussions had taken place regarding James potentially joining TNA's creative team. However, by July 31, Dave Meltzer reported that negotiations had stalled and the two sides did not appear to be close to reaching an agreement.
Despite the speculation surrounding his next move in professional wrestling, James indicated on Wednesday that there is currently nothing official on the employment front, describing himself as “unemployed and living my life.”
For now, it remains unclear whether Road Dogg intends to pursue another backstage position with a major wrestling promotion or continue enjoying time away from the industry.
