Kevin Owens says spending 15 months away from the ring with a serious neck injury has completely changed the way he approaches his WWE career.
Owens has enjoyed a remarkable run since arriving in WWE, collecting championships and sharing the ring with some of the biggest names in the industry. Among the highlights was his WrestleMania 38 main event against Steve Austin, a moment many wrestlers could only dream of experiencing.
However, Owens admits that throughout much of his career, he was often so focused on what came next that he did not always fully appreciate what was happening in front of him.
That perspective shifted dramatically when a neck injury threatened to bring his career to an unexpected end.
Speaking with FACES Magazine, Owens explained that his recovery was never about chasing another championship or targeting a particular opponent. His main goal was simply to wrestle again.
"Obviously the last 10, 11 years in WWE, I had this incredible career and I got so many special moments, so many special matches, so many special memories. The last year and a half, I really didn’t picture any specific moment, like being in the ring with this guy, or winning a title or anything like that. It was really just about getting back in the ring at all and making sure I enjoy the time I have left."
Owens added that the experience has removed much of the pressure he previously placed on himself during his WWE career.
"It was just this feeling where, if I go back, the one thing I’ll do more than anything is just make sure I get [to] enjoy the ride. When you’re coming up in WWE and you feel like you have so much to prove, so much to achieve, and obviously the more successful you are, the more money you’ll make for your family, and for your future… it almost feels like you have all of these responsibilities and there’s so much pressure, but that pressure is gone now."
Having already accomplished more than he once imagined possible, Owens says he no longer wants to allow major moments to pass without appreciating them.
"I had this incredible career, I did things I never thought I would do, I did things that a lot of people will never get to do. Through it all, I would lose perspective, and sometimes I wouldn’t take the time to enjoy those moments as much as I should have. I don’t want to do that anymore. And now, every match I have, every show I’m on now, is a gift, because for a long time, I didn’t think it would happen again."
Owens' return appeared far from certain earlier this year. As recently as April 2026, he remained some distance away from being cleared following the neck surgery he underwent in 2025.
His recovery accelerated considerably over the following months, and by July, Owens was informed that he was physically ready to resume his in-ring career.
The timing ultimately allowed Owens to make his comeback in time for WWE SummerSlam 2026, where he quickly returned to the championship picture by becoming the number one contender for the Undisputed WWE Championship.
After facing the possibility that his wrestling career could already be over, Owens is now approaching this latest chapter differently. Rather than constantly looking towards the next accomplishment, he intends to appreciate every match and appearance for however long his career continues.
