Cody Rhodes will get his chance to settle the score with Randy Orton after their issues exploded on the latest episode of WWE SmackDown.
SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis confirmed on Saturday that Rhodes and Orton will meet one-on-one at WWE Sunday Night Main Event on September 6. The event will take place from State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia.
The announcement follows Friday's chaotic SmackDown main event, where Rhodes had been scheduled to face Sami Zayn. That match never officially got underway after Orton attacked Rhodes before the opening bell.
Aldis revealed that Rhodes immediately wanted an opportunity to get his hands on Orton and confirmed he had delivered on his promise to make the match happen.
“As far as Cody Rhodes is concerned, there’s only one thing on his mind, and that’s revenge. And I’m pleased to announce that I have followed through on the promise I made to Cody last night on SmackDown, when I told him I would do everything I could to make it happen.”
“Sunday, September 6th. Sunday Night Main Event, State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia. Cody Rhodes gets his chance at revenge when he goes one-on-one with Randy Orton.”
The rivalry intensified during the August 14 edition of SmackDown when Orton prevented Rhodes' scheduled encounter with Zayn from even starting. After attacking Rhodes before the bell, Orton became involved in a heated fight with the former Undisputed WWE Champion that spilled around ringside and into the crowd.
Rhodes eventually managed to turn the tables and introduced a steel chair into the confrontation before WWE officials intervened. The show ultimately ended without the advertised Rhodes vs. Zayn match taking place.
WWE has now wasted little time arranging the next chapter, with Rhodes and Orton officially set to collide in Atlanta on September 6.
