CM Punk is heading to NXT this weekend, with the Undisputed WWE Champion confirming he will appear at Saturday night’s untelevised live event in Petersburg, Virginia.

Punk revealed the news through his Instagram account, adding some considerable star power to the developmental brand’s weekend schedule. WWE has yet to announce exactly what role Punk will have at the event, and as things stand, he is not advertised for a match.

The NXT live event will take place on Saturday, August 15 at the Virginia State University Multi-Purpose Center, with the action scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. local time. Unlike the weekly NXT television show, WWE’s developmental live events are not broadcast.

Punk’s upcoming NXT appearance comes just days after he competed at WWE’s live event at EagleBank Arena in Fairfax, Virginia on Thursday.

During that appearance, Punk addressed Cody Rhodes and offered him another opportunity at the Undisputed WWE Championship. Punk told Rhodes that he could have a rematch whenever he wanted, while also acknowledging that the circumstances surrounding his successful title defence at SummerSlam were far from straightforward.

That exchange has not yet carried over to WWE television, particularly with another challenger already positioned at the front of the championship queue.

Kevin Owens made his return during the second night of SummerSlam and immediately placed himself in contention for Punk’s championship. Owens defeated Sami Zayn, Finn Balor and GUNTHER in a Fatal Four-Way match designed to determine the new number one contender.

As a result, Owens currently remains the next official challenger for Punk despite the champion’s recent comments to Rhodes.

Punk captured the Undisputed WWE Championship from Sami Zayn on the July 6 episode of Raw in Chicago. He entered the championship picture after GUNTHER attacked Rhodes, preventing Cody from competing in his scheduled title rematch.

Punk then successfully defended the championship against Rhodes at SummerSlam, although the finish came with some major outside involvement. Randy Orton made his return and struck Rhodes with an RKO, allowing Punk to leave the event with the title still around his waist.

With Punk now making the unexpected trip to an NXT live event, it remains to be seen whether he will simply make a special appearance or become involved with one of the brand’s rising stars.
