The Undertaker Details Frightening Aftermath of WrestleMania 30 Concussion

The Undertaker Details Frightening Aftermath of WrestleMania 30 Concussion

When The Undertaker thanked Triple H during his WWE Hall of Fame speech for reminding him who he was during one of the lowest points of his career, he was referring to a brief but powerful moment backstage at WrestleMania 31.

Speaking on Insight with Chris Van Vliet, Mark Calaway revealed how Triple H helped settle his nerves just seconds before he walked through the curtain to face Bray Wyatt.

The story began one year earlier at WrestleMania 30, when Brock Lesnar famously ended The Undertaker's undefeated WrestleMania streak. During the match, Undertaker suffered a severe concussion and was taken to hospital before the event had even finished.

ā€œSo, so on the night that you know, I really say, I’m sure everybody at this point knows, but when the streak got broke by Lesnar, I got a really bad concussion, and didn’t remember the match.ā€

ā€œYeah, I went right to the hospital before Mania was over, and my memory didn’t even start coming back till I don’t know, it was four or five in the morning. You know, it’s kind of like you see on TV when the doctor comes in and asks you, you know, what’s your name, and you know how old you are? They did that about every 10 or 15 minutes.ā€

Calaway recalled just how frightening the situation became. Despite being unable to remember his own name or where he was, there were two people he immediately recognised.

ā€œCrazy, the two people that I knew. This is what’s crazy: I knew who Michelle was, and I knew who Vince was. I didn’t. I couldn’t have told you my name. I couldn’t have told you where I was. It was really, really bizarre.ā€

More than a decade later, Undertaker still has no memory of actually wrestling Lesnar that night.

ā€œI don’t know. Just I did it on instinct, I guess, because I don’t, I don’t remember it. My last memory of the day was, I don’t, maybe 2 o’clock. That’s the last thing that I remember, and you know, there’s a long, big, huge protocol of things that I had to do at that point, stretching and warming up and getting shots in my knees and hips and things, and I don’t remember any of it and never did and I still haven’t. I just don’t remember it at all.ā€

After recovering and eventually returning to training, another problem emerged. Undertaker began questioning whether he could trust himself inside the ring again.

ā€œOnce I recover from the concussion and I start training again and I’m wondering if I’m gonna come back the next year, self-doubt kind of starts to set in. Obviously at that point, I’m getting older. I’m in the twilight of my career, but there was nothing that was real significant that I could point out to say, oh, that’s right there. That’s where I got concussed. So you’ve probably heard the old adage like fighters get old overnight, right? And there’s just so many bumps that you can take, and those are the self-doubt thoughts that were creeping into my mind. It’s like, what if it happens again?ā€

Doctors had fully cleared him to compete, but the medical reassurance did not completely remove those doubts.

ā€œI had a clean bill of health from the doctors, and they were like, no, no, man. They were like, we can’t tell you not to do this. They said, if it happens again, then maybe we need to have a different discussion. But I did all the protocol that I was doing, got green-lighted from everybody, but right before the music starts. You know, man, self-doubt really creeps in.ā€

That brought Undertaker to WrestleMania 31 on March 29, 2015. Bray Wyatt was already waiting in the ring while Undertaker sat crouched in Gorilla position, battling thoughts he had rarely experienced during his legendary career.

Triple H noticed.

ā€œI think he could sense it, that I was struggling, and he just quietly got up, and I think I was kind of crouched down in the corner, thinking about things. And he goes, he just comes up and he goes, ā€˜Hey,’ he says, ā€˜Don’t forget who the f you are. You’re the effing undertaker,’ and it was like it was just enough to like, you know what, you’re right, you know, I’ve done this a million times, everything’s gonna be fine.ā€

Those few words were enough.

ā€œAnd I went out and had the match, but man, I wouldn’t say panicked, but there was just so much self-doubt in my head, like that I hadn’t experienced in a long, long time.ā€

Undertaker went on to defeat Wyatt that night, beginning another chapter of his WrestleMania story. Seven years later, when he entered the WWE Hall of Fame in 2022, he publicly thanked Triple H for reminding him exactly who he was when he needed to hear it most.
