TNA Odyssey a Home Run - Liverpool

Posted By: Wrestling-Radio.com on Jun 15, 2008

AS his grap group arrived in Britain for the first ever time, Jeremy Borash asked the fans: "We've waited six years to say this .... are you ready for TNA?"

And over two nights at Liverpool's superb Odyssey Arena the answer was a resounding yes.

The wrestling was excellent throughout especially the bouts featuring AJ Styles, Petey Williams and LAX — but it was the two 1,500 sell-out crowds that really raised the roof.

There was not one moment of silence.

Every big move had them screaming ‘T-N-A', great matches got ‘this is awesome' and the few missteps ‘you f***ed up'.

There were football songs adapted for the occasions and, best of all, the duelling chats TNA fans are famous for.

The highlight of audience participation was the ‘let's go Booker / let's go Rhino' calls in the semi-main event of the second night, which was lasted five minutes and encompassed just one wrestling move.

Veterans of the British promotional circuit at ringside, who've seen every big live show in the UK of the last 10 years, confessed this was the loudest crowd they've ever heard.

And it left boss Dixie Carter with a huge smile on her face and a little tear in her eye.

After all, this was her group's big chance to impress - a small tour of small venues to test the waters for much bigger things in the future.

They brought a trimmed roster, but one that still included world champion Samoa Joe, Knockout queen Awesome Kong, Britain's Doug Williams and an injured Kurt Angle whose heartfelt promos were just as well received as his wrestling would have been.

And what the company lacked in depth they made up with in the quality of their wrestling.

The opening match of the first night, a three-way between Petey Williams, Sanjay Dutt and Jay Lethal, featured more big moves than you'd see in an entire WWE house show.

From there things just got better and better.

Legendary referee Earl Hebner had the fans in the palm of his hand, invigorated heel Booker T worked the room with ease and faces like Styles and Samoa Joe just revelled in adoration.

The second night was even better than the first with The Motor City Machine Guns v Sanjay and Petey setting an incredibly high bar.

And when that was followed by Awesome Kong v Gail Kim, best bout of the night AJ v Jay v Doug and a unique Joe v Abyss main event - you know you're seeing real class.

It's safe to say TNA don't imitate, they innovate.

Not content with putting on some of the best wrestling shows in the world, the guys and girls backstage decided that every member of the paying public should leave with more than a memory, T shirt, programme and grainy picture.

Staying behind for hours after the shows ALL the wrestlers, Earl, JB and Dixie herself happily met, signed and posed for their loyal followers.

And not one fan left early, queuing patiently to meet their heroes.

TNA achieved what every entertainment company should - they made sure everyone left with a smile on the face and something to tell their friends about on Monday morning.

Dixie's company delivered everything they said with this, their first UK tour, and so much more.

Consider they are a mere six-years-old, TNA are doing everything right by walking before they run.

The venues will get bigger, the fan base will grow and the product will just get better and better.

And if you missed out this time - or you were there and are hankering for more - come back to The Sun on Monday morning when we'll be announcing the dates and venues for a tour that will have Vince McMahon looking over his shoulder.
