Dave Meltzer of F4WOnline.com/The Wrestling Observer Newsletter has awarded a 5.5 star rating to the Johnny Gargano-Adam Cole NXT Championship Match from NXT TakeOver: New York. The longtime wrestling journalist called it "the greatest match in WWE history".

As for the other matches at NXT TakeOver, Meltzer gave them the following ratings:

1. War Raiders vs. Aleister Black & Ricochet: 4.5 stars

2. Velveteen Dream vs. Matt Riddle: 4.5 stars

3. Pete Dunne vs. WALTER Hahn: 4.75 stars

4. Shayna Baszler vs. Bianca Belair vs. Kairi Sane vs. Io Shirai: 3.75 stars
