PWInsider is reporting that a WWE event scheduled for February 9th at the brand new Rogers Arena in Edmonton, Alberta has been cancelled. This cancellation is a result of new regulations banning all combat sports which was implemented by the city’s council following the June death of boxer/MMA fighter Tim Hague following an Edmonton fight. The venue has issued the following statement
“Following new guidelines established by Edmonton’s city council, WWE’s event on Friday, February 9 at Rogers Place has been postponed. The WWE is working closely with the local Commission, and hope to return with their sports entertainment events to Edmonton in the near future.”
In December, Edmonton city council announced a one year moratorium on new licenses and permits falling under the umbrella of combat sports. This includes professional wrestling. The city has come under fire due to the timing of the ban since a UFC event was recently held there in September which was seen as an economic boost to the city
