WWE Superstar and former champion John Cena recently sat down for an interview with The Wrap to promote Season 2 of his new reality show "American Grit". During the interview, Cena gave comments on criticisms he's received over the years regarding being "coddled" by the WWE and having a reputation for "burying young talent". Below, are highlights fromĀ the interview
Ā
If He's "coddled" By WWE
āIf you look at my existence in WWE, I have never asked anyone and will never ask anyone to pull any punches,ā Cena explained. āI believe that itās a āStrong Surviveā environment, and accept nothing less. I think people forget my [history] in WWE sometimes and the fact that I truly had to earn every inch. There is this overwhelming perception that I am protected and coddled ā that couldnāt be farther from the truth.ā
āI just believe you bring your best to every story and you bring your best to every fight. And if my skills arenāt as good, then itās time to step back. Itās just a matter of believing in myself and going out there and speaking from the heart. I believe that sometimes thatās something missing in some of the WWE storylines ā¦ being honest and brave enough to put everything out there on the table.ā
His Reputation For āBurying Young Talentā
āThis is why I have the reputation of quote-unquote āburying younger talent,ā because I will let them do whatever they want with me ā and then after they get done, theyāre not as motivated,ā Cena remarked. āSo, itās not that I sink their ship, itās that they fail to operate at an elite level. And Iām on to the next person, [to] whom I say, āHey man, bring your best punch and Iām gonna punch backā ā and they donāt take that attitude beyond me.ā
