Former WWE Tag Team Champions Matt and Jeff Hardy made their surprise return to WWE at Sunday night's WrestleMania 33 event, where they were announced by show hosts The New Day as surprise participants in the Raw Tag Team Championship Ladder Match.

The match was originally scheduled to be a Triple Threat Ladder Match, in which champions Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson were to defend against challengers Sheamus & Cesaro and Enzo Amore & Big Cass; however, before the match began, The New Day announced that the match had now become a Fatal 4 Way Ladder Match with a new team being added to the mix.
