Following the main event of WWE Extreme Rules, which saw Roman Reigns retain the WWE World Heavyweight Championship over AJ Styles in an Extreme Rules Match, WWE Superstar Seth Rollins made his return to the company by attacking Reigns, hitting him with a Pedigree. Following the attack, Rollins grabbed the title and held it high in the air.

Rollins has been out of action since November 2015 dealing with a torn ACL, MCL, and medial meniscus in one of his knees that he sustained at a WWE live event in Dublin, Ireland.
