[WNS Exclusive] Interview With The Blue Meanie

Posted By: Simon Mills on Dec 31, 2014

Yesterday I spoke with Brian Heffron, better known to wrestling fans as The Blue Meanie. Heffron is an ECW original and former WWE Superstar. We caught up with him to see what he's up to now and to ask about his work with the WWE Network and the ECW Unreleased DVD. The full interview can be seen below.

WNS: Brian, during your wrestling career as The Blue Meanie you gained quite the cult following. It seemed you were tailor made for Paul Heyman's ECW. Looking back on those days now, would you see you look back on it fondly?

HEFFRON: Absolutely! If it weren't for the opportunity that ECW afforded me to do what I had always wanted to do. I wouldn't be here all these years later still performing and now coaching future wrestlers at The Monster Factory. I got to work be a part of a magic time to be in wrestling. I was there for ECW's hottest period. I was also able to be in WWE for the Attitude Era. If not for ECW I don't know how my career would wave turned out. I'm forever grateful for my time in ECW.

WNS: You say you are now teaching wrestling. Do you find this as fulfilling as being in the ring?

HEFFRON: I do. I'm coaching guys at the Monster factory in Paulsboro, NJ. (WWW.MonsterFactory.org) I do it to give back to the business that's given me so much. We have a good crew of students and Coaches. I'm there with owner Danny Cage who was Larry Sharpe's protege. He wrestled until a severe back injury knocked him out of commission. He also had a great amateur career. We also have Bile Wiles who was in ECW as Bilvis Wesley and ROH's QT Marshall. We have a student who has gone on to sign with WWE last year named Steve Cutler and we are the current home to former UFC fighter Matthew Riddle as he looks to take on pro wrestling. I feel like I have and can teach these kids what I've learned over the last 20+ years. The do's and most importantly the DONT'S.

WNS: Recently you worked with WWE in promoting the ECW special for the WWE Network and the ECW Unreleased DVD. How did it feel to be apart of that venture?

HEFFRON: It was awesome! It stemmed from a small part I did on The JBL and Cole show on WWE's youtube page. I did a brief cameo/photobomb during a segment with Emma and Heath Slater where I photobombed them. Then with in the next day I was contacted by WWE home video about hosting ECW Unreleased Vol. 3 with Stevie Richards and Joey Styles. It all happened VERY quickly. I got to Stamford Nov. 20 where we got to introduce some matches and reminisce about ECW. They also had an idea for a special that will also help promote the ECW Unreleased disc  a few weeks before the dvd's release. I won't go into details because I don't want to spoil it but it may be some of the funniest stuff Stevie, Joey and I have done! Again. It's another reason to be grateful for my time in ECW. All these years later and it's given me great opportunities like this.

WNS: I'm going to bring this up! Several of your fans have started a campaign to have you be an entrant on WWE's annual Royal Rumble which this year emanates from Philadelphia, the home of ECW. Wrestling fans are being asked to add the hashtag #bWo to show support for this to happen. If the oppurtunity came calling, could we see the Blue Meanie grace the WWE ring one final time?

HEFFRON: You know I'm grateful for what I've been able to do so far with this ECW project. If they were willing to let Stevie Richards and The Blue Meanie into the Royal Rumble that would be the cherry on top. You are right in that A LOT of fans have asked about it. They've been doing #bWoRoyalRumble hashtags in hope to get some kind of momentum to the cause. Ultimately it makes a lot of sense. We are hosting ECW Unreleased Volume 3. The Rumble is in ECW country. Stevie and I are 2 Philly guys. I could literally walk to the Wells Fargo Center backwards and blind folded. It would be an honor to be able to have one last hurrah in a WWE ring. My ECW career started in Philly. My WWE career started in Philly. My only Wrestlemania was 15 in Philly. One last time to be in a WWE in the Royal Rumble in Philly would be like storybook ending. To do it with Stevie would be even better. If WWE wants to to it I'm down. If the fans want to let them know that would be amazing. if you remember when the WWE released me in 1999 it was a fan campaign called "Save The Meanie" got me my job back. Those same fans could get the bWo in the Philly Royal Rumble.

WNS: So what does the future hold for you, Brian? Is there anything you feel you have yet to achieve?

HEFFRON: I'm looking forward to the release of ECW Unreleased Volume 3. I'm looking forward to the WWE network special. I'm looking forward to continuing coach young aspiring wrestlers. Oh yeah! And hopefully #bWoRoyalRumble becomes a reality. I've been fortunate to do the things I've done and the people I've had the chance to work with. I've often said I may have never made a million dollars in the world of wrestling. But what I HAVE been paid royally in is Fans, friends and experience!

Brian Heffron can be followed on Twitter @BlueMeaniebWo and fans are asked to tweet #bWoRoyalRumble if they want to support the campaign.
