WNS Column: Romans Empire?

Roman Reigns has been running ramped since the day he walked into the WWE. From being a tag team champion, taking out The Undertaker, even defeating one of the best stables of all time in Evolution. All with his former Shield brothers Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose. Now with all three going their separate ways, Roman Reigns seems to be the first of them to have his shot to be the top guy in the Company. The question is, is Roman Reigns ready to carry that load?

Reigns has been involved in some of the great feuds over the past two years. The first two that comes to mind are The Shield vs. The Wyatt’s and also The Shield vs. Evolution. Both were around the time when Reigns clearly started to emerge as the man that would be the breakout star of The Shield. He would be the one to go toe to toe with the leaders of the opponents stable like Triple HHH and Bray Wyatt. Although, when it came time to talk, he always had a mouth piece in Ambrose and also Rollins towards the tail end of their time together. Sure Reigns would chime in every now and then, but it would make me question his mic skills when all he had to say was “believe that and believe in The Shield”.

Now that he is flying solo and has to cut his own promos I can say that he is not that bad at it. He can come out and talk a little bit like the bad ass he is personified to be, but it makes me wonder if just that small bit can help carry a singles feud that a champion needs to. He is still young, so given the time I can see him improving. Yes, he has the look of a top guy right now, but he needs to get better on the mic to actually be the one.

While it might sound like I am a Reigns hater, it is actually the complete opposite. I am all for a fresh face at the top of the company. Giving his a run at the top this soon into his singles career would be just like eating cake before Thanksgiving dinner. It would spoil him for the fans in the long run.

I just see trace in him that are comparable to someone that most of us diehard fans hate. I see a lot of John Cena in Roman Reigns.

While their starts may have been different, they both rose to stardom fairly quickly. Both of them fit the model of a WWE Champion. They both also have full support of the fans while they rise through the ranks (Cena did back then if some have forgotten through the years of hate). The similarity that concerns me the most is Reigns’ move set. For years now fans have been bashing Cena for using the same recycled moves. Who can forget when he faced Rob Van Dam at ECW One Night Stand in 2006 when the ruthless fans chanted “Same Old Shit”? When I watch a Reigns match now I can feel myself thinking the same thing. You can almost give an exact play by play of his matches. Lots of striking, a few clotheslines, get beat up, few more clotheslines, Samoan Drop, flying boot while opponent hangs on the bottom rope, Superman punch, and finally a spear. I get that both are not the technical wrestlers like a Daniel Bryan. They are both very powerful and athletic men. While Cena may too far down the line in his career, it is not too late for Reigns to expand his move set. It’s been said that if you have seen one Cena match, you have seen them all. With Reigns being the future of the company, I would hate to hear the same said about him.

With all that being said, Reigns is still young. He has plenty of time to improve on the microphone and on his in-ring ability. He clearly has the make of being one of the next big stars in the WWE. Given someone time to fully establish himself as a singles competitor and prove that he is reliable. Then the whole package will be complete. I plead that WWE allows him the time to flourish into the next go to guy.

Then we will all truly Believe in Reigns.
