'Scarborough Country' Notes from Monday night's program:
- Host Danny Abrams said he believed the Fragile X Syndrome story was just a diversion from the real issue, massive steroid use.
- Former WWE superstar Steve Blackman said in his experience, a lot doctors are fans of the athletes. Blackman suggested that wrestlers go from state to state to doctor to doctor to get what they need.
- Marc Mero said wrestlers diagnose themselves, and said many doctors have pictures of wrestlers on their walls.
- Author Irvin Muchnick agreed that this improper writing of prescriptions goes on in the wrestling business, and pointed out that it has happened for years. Muchnick said the story is bad news for WWE, a publicly traded company, as they come off as â€"key enabler in pro wrestlingââ¬â¢s cocktail of death.ââ¬Â
- Blackman agreed steroids may have played a factor in the Benoit case, but doesnââ¬â¢t believe it was steroids alone that led Benoit to murder his family and then take his own life.
- B.J. Bernstein, a former Georgia prosecutor, said that with the feds involved in the case, Dr. Astin is looking at ââ¬Å"substantial prison timeââ¬Â and suggested that they may go after other doctors that engage in similar improper activities.
- Mero said Benoit misusing steroids could have led to Benoit taking the life of his wife, and then decided he didnââ¬â¢t want to go to prison and killed his son and then himself.
- ââ¬Å"Getting the gimmickââ¬Â is the phrase Mero used for wrestlers that seek prescriptions without medical reasons. He said doctors attended shows and became friendly with wrestlers. Maro said the wrestling companies would send memos to stay away from certain doctors.
- Mero said Benoit was always normal and level headed and thinks about those that are not. ââ¬Å"Something has to be done about steroids,ââ¬Â Mero said. Mero applauded the governor in Florida for signing a bill that would randomly test high school athletes in football, basketball, and wrestling in the state. Mero challenged WWE to match the efforts as he noted that Wrestlemania to coming to Orlando next year.
- Dr. Todd Schlifstein, a New York Univ. Sports Rehab Physician, said the improper writing of prescriptions isnââ¬â¢t something talked about in the medical field.
- Schlifstein said Fragile X Syndrome does not make you undersized.
- Muchnick said that if there is no medical proof that Daniel Benoit had Fragile X Syndrome than perhaps Chris Benoit injected the boy due to fear of him being undersized.
- Christian Red of the New York Daily News said Benoit was a known user of GHB, the date rape drug, and used it with Chris Adams dating back to 2001, and was told Benoit continued to use it after Adamsââ¬â¢ death. Red claimed that Benoit may have used it as recently as two years ago. (Fact tip: GHB increases sexual prowess and boosts energy).
- Red said the girlfriend of Chris Adams died about a year before Adams of a GHB/alcohol overdose.
- Mero was honest about the use of GHB in wrestling by saying, ââ¬Å"welcome to the world of professional wrestling.ââ¬Â Mero admitted to using GHB to ââ¬Å"take the edge off,ââ¬Â and said it helped to fall asleep. Mero said it needs to be regulated.
- ââ¬Å"It a brutal life,ââ¬Â said Blackman, who said wrestlers often times donââ¬â¢t get back to the hotel till late in the morning and must get up early the following day to catch an airplane. He said guys do what they have to fall asleep.
- Blackman said he hopes that Benoit was not self medicating his son.
- Abrams discussed Bill Oââ¬â¢Reillyââ¬â¢s comments that Nancy Benoit and Jessie Davis (the pregnant woman allegedly murdered by Bobby Cutts Jr. in Ohio) should have been protected their children in a talking points memo on his program. A guest stated that just walking away doesnââ¬â¢t guarantee your safety, and often times the most danger period in a domestic abuse case is when the victim leaves the situation.
