COLUMN: Randy Orton Suspended - WWE's Worst Nightmare Or Prime Solution To Ratings?

Posted By: Lee on May 30, 2012

Randy Orton was today suspended for the 2nd time. Orton trending, Our website went down for a short while. Websites, Experts, Wrestlers commented and gave they opinions on the matter and it comes down to 2 options. This is either WWE's worst nightmare or it's WWE's best chance at making new stars and improving ratings.

Aswell as Orton, The Miz, Jericho, Rey, Henry, HHH, Taker, Hell The Rock are ALL names that won't be seen on WWE TV for a while. Add to that Vince has no plans of returning to TV, Tensai is "flopping" with WWE officials, Gimmicks not getting over, Rating's slowing down, No stars being majorly pushed and no real direction in WWE programming, WWE in it's "Post Wrestlemania Lull" is going through it's toughest test in years.

Nothing seems to be clicking, Randy Orton was one of the guys on the roster that had "changed, adapted and clicked with the audience". He was one of WWE's top drawers when not even in the main event. He often gained a huge pop, his character, while stale, draws crowds from all over the world. To be suspended for 60 days is a kick in the teeth to everyone who bought a Randy Orton t-shirt. Whilst we may not find out what led to this, it's a violation and he knows he has done wrong.

It's also very interesting timing. John Cena has recently been moved to the Smackdown shows throughout the summer which is Orton's normal draw. While Smackdown has had issues drawing crowds, it's odd that Cena's move is one that occured just before this.

WWE also decided to announce this suspension in the peak of TNA's build to live shows, "big announcements", an evolution and a change of focus. While TNA isn't near WWE in standards/audience, it's a fantastic time for TNA to grasp the market by the balls and completely change things. Will it happen? Probably not, but WWE are risking losing a certain core if TNA picks up a little.

Or....Are WWE in for what can change them forever? With a big section of "recognisable" talent out, this is the obvious chance for the "mid-card" wrestlers to stand out, to push up the roster, to make a name for themselves. Obviously, WWE will limit some potential to how they want to but this is their time. Dolph Ziggler is the obvious one that comes to mind. He sells, he bumps, he has just broken from Vicki and Swagger, he can be in that main event and talk.

Whilst Dolph is there, new guys, even Ryback, Sandow, Swagger himself can come back and push push push. Guys like Christian can provide a major stepping stone, Tensai can be used more effectively, longer matches to get these guys over to the audience in the arena and at home. These basics are essential, these are the things that WWE can take from this Orton suspension.

With Orton suspended, he can say goodbye to some major paychecks and A LOT less media attention, Orton on his 2nd strike now also has limited push material. One more and he's done for good. It's safe to say the Wellness Policy WILL suspend anyone. The only man who COULD get away with it would be John Cena. I believe John Cena has taken steroids before, but since 2004, I think he's been as clean as it gets. He has been WWE's Number One Guy. Orton has just blown his chance at that, but will WWE slump further or prosper successfully?
