Column: Top 5 Wrestlemania 30 Destinations

Posted By: Blake Blaze Campbell on Feb 29, 2012

Upon hearing the news that Wrestlemania XXX is unlikely to be hosted in Madison Square Garden, I couldn’t help but begin to ponder different possibilities for Professional Wrestling’s greatest and largest event. I’m sure many are saddened that the trend of decade hosting at MSG could be coming to a near end but I myself don’t really have an issue with it. With Wrestlemania 29 being hosted in New Jersey, I find it almost unfair that the area could get another Wrestlemania the year afterwards. Sometimes you have to be willing to part with tradition and nostalgia to do what’s best and most logical for the business. So in hopes to entertain each of you, I’ve compiled my Top 5 venues that I think would be most fitting, logical and deserving for a very important Wrestlemania. Given that it’s going to be the 30th anniversary of the biggest even in Pro Wrestling, it’s got to be big! Here we go:

Honorable Mention: Busch Stadium

Busch Stadium

Location: St. Louis, Missouri

Capacity: 47,000+

Why?: Busch Stadium is one of the most beautiful stadiums in all of sports, especially baseball. With an iconic view of the Arch and downtown St. Louis, it’s impossible not to imagine the camera’s panning over a brilliant looking Wrestlemania setup with a Downtown St. Louis skyline. The city itself is a sight to see and would provide plenty of things for tourists to do in their free time leading up to the event. Not to mention, Raymond James Stadium isn’t too far off and would provide a good place to host Wrestlemania Axxess. The city tries to maintain a small town feel in a big city layout so you could expect the locals to be warm and receptive of the tourists the event would undoubtedly bring.

Why Not?: Unfortunately, aside from St. Louis there isn’t really much to see in Midwest America aside from Corn and…more corn. Any hopes of venturing outside of the City and catching America at it’s finest, is highly unlikely. There would also be concerns that St. Louis may not be able to handle the influx of tourists the event would bring. Also this would mean Wrestlemania could interfere with the opening week of Major League Baseball and that would be a large turn off for the city. And finally, a large amount of the decision would be pending on how much of the infield could be filled with additional seating as 47,000+ wouldn’t be sufficient given the attendance of the last few Wrestlemanias. Add up the geography issue, seating issues and the possible issues with the MLB and it’s enough to keep this venue just outside of my Top 5.

Number 5: PNC Park

PNC Park

Location: Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Capacity: 39,000+

Why?: PNC Park is highly considered one of the nicest baseball parks in the world, if not the nicest. From all of the modern day constructions and the unmatched backdrop, it’d be hard to find a more eye-catching venue than this great stadium. The WWE could have a field day with the different Wrestlemania layouts this great venue would allow. As soon as I viewed the picture, I immediately pictured the Wrestlemania stage taking over Centerfield, providing an amazing backdrop of Downtown Pittsburgh and the Roberto Clemente Bridge. It’d also bring a huge Professional Wrestling event to one of the most faithful wrestling locations in the World, Pennsylvania. Now, I’m not a fan of Pennsylvania for various sports reasons that I won’t jump into. But even with that bias, I can’t deny the excellence of PNC Park and the potential it would bring. Tourists could check out some of the local attractions in Pittsburgh and then make the trip over to Philadelphia for a few History lessons on the good ol’ U-S-A and to visit various other attractions (Like the closest Philly Cheese Steak Vendor).

Why Not?: The stadium lacks in major capacity, which could be remedied with a proper seating plan within the field itself. But the fact that it’s barely hosted more than thirty-nine thousand people can be very disheartening to the WWE as they plan what will undoubtedly be a huge event. There is also the issue with the MLB and the Pittsburgh Pirates possible games scheduled within the week. Much like Busch Stadium, MLB schedules could come into effect and make this venue impossible to bring to fruition. Then again, I don’t see the owners of the Stadium getting bent out of shape given the miserable attendance at Pirates games.

Number 4: CenturyLink Field

CenturyLink Field

Location: Seattle, Washington

Capacity: 72,000+

Why?: CenturyLink Field in Seattle, Washington is one of the most unique looking stadiums you’ll ever find. It’s also one of the coolest looking stadiums that you’ll ever find. Seattle is a very interesting city to say the least but it’s probably one of the most refreshing as well. It has also already proven that it knows how to host a Wrestlemania for those of you who remember how awesome Wrestlemania at Safeco Field was. It could easily hold enough fans to please the WWE and it would provide plenty of other attractions for those travelling into Seattle for the venue. I’d love to see what the WWE could do with such an amazing looking Stadium. And I’d love to Seattle be rewarded for the great job they did last time.

Why Not?: Weather could very easily be an issue given Spring Showers and the fact that it always rains in Seattle anyways. Nobody wants to attend a Wrestlemania that’s cancelled midway through because of being called for rain. CenturyLink Field doesn’t have a roof and I don’t imagine them being able to come up with a possible fix for what could be a severe problem. Other than this, I can’t come up with anything legitimate enough to block this destination.

Number 3: The Rose Bowl

The Rose Bowl

Location: Pasadena, California

Capacity: 95,000+

Why?:Ā  Well first off, it’s the freaking Rose Bowl people. The stadium itself is one of the most respected, recognized and glorified venues there are. It’s a great stadium that would provide the WWE with plenty of dress up opportunities. The amount of attendance they could bring in for this event would easily exceed one hundred thousand and it just so happens to be located in one of the best tourist destinations in the United States of America. Only minutes away from Los Angeles, this would provide an incredible location to host a Wrestlemania as big as number thirty. The stadium was recently renovated to be modernized but it still maintains an old-school bowl feel that anybody could admire. The weather is destined to be perfect and the amount of tourist attractions is probably unmatchable. Pasadena/Los Angeles, California would be an excellent destination for Wrestlemania XXX.

Why Not?: I’ll keep this relatively short, simply because there isn’t much negative you can say about this option. The only thing I could see being a problem, is the brutal commutes that would be made. Los Angeles and its outskirts are notorious for the disgustingly awful traffic that infects it’s roadways every single day. An event as large as this is only going to add to what some call the worst traffic in the United States and that could be a very large turn off to those who are looking to attend Wrestlemania and Wrestemania Axxess. But even with that said, that still shouldn’t be enough to discourage the WWE about doing an event at this great venue.

Number 2: Cowboy Stadium

Cowboy Stadium

Location: Arlington (DFW Metro), Texas

Capacity: 111,000+

Why?: Because this is the greatest stadium in the entire World. No I’m not kidding, exaggerating or showing favoritism because my favorite football team plays in the sports palace. It simply truly is the greatest venue that I have ever seen or been in. It’s the golden standard for what every Stadium and/or Arena should be like in the future.Ā  I’ve been on several tours in the stadium and it’s amazing seeing the reactions that people have to this Stadium. It can host over one hundred and eleven thousand people and it’s located in a great area. Being built in Arlington, Texas right between Fort Worth, Texas and Dallas, Texas makes it a great location for any huge even. The stadium is located right next to Rangers Ballpark in Arlington for any baseball fans that would like to attend a game and it’s also located right next to Six Flags Over Texas (Theme Park) and Hurricane Harbor (Water Park). It’s got one of the largest replay screens in the world, which the WWE would undoubtedly have an amazing time with. Tack on all of the great attractions in Fort Worth and Dallas and it’s hard to come up with one logical reason as to why the WWE shouldn’t be on their knees begging for this venue for Wrestlemania XXX.

Why Not?: There’s only one logical reason as to why this can’t happen. Cowboy Stadium has already come to an agreement to host March Madness during the very same time period that Wrestlemania would be hosted. Two attractions as large as these would be near impossible to put together within such a close time range. But know this, if it wasn’t for March Madness I would have Cowboy Stadium listed at Number! But instead, we get a venue just as amazing…that could be absolutely huge!

Number 1: Wembley Stadium

Wembley Stadium

Location: London, England

Capacity: 90,000+

Why?: This would be the first ever Wrestlemania hosted outside of North America and how fitting that it be hosted in one of the greatest stadiums in the world? Let’s face it, the great fans in England deserve to host at least one Wrestlemania. These fans are incredibly loyal and they stay up to ridiculous times just to watch Monday Night RAW live. I can speak from personal experience that any event at Wembley Stadium feels magical. It’s a huge stadium that is unmatched in class and substance. It’s also a great enough venue that they’d be sure to bring in tourists from the States that typically don’t have to make such a long trip to attend the event. The stadium, location and attractions are perfect for a Wrestlemania that has to be big! Moving this event over to England provides many Americans that opportunity and reasoning to finally make that trip over the pond and witness the greatness that is London. I don’t feel the need to list off the endless amount of things that fans would be able to entertain themselves with before and after Wrestlemania! This needs to be done, if not at Wrestlemania XXX, than sometime soon afterwards.

Why Not?: This is where you’re going to see a lot of selfish American’s complain. There is going to be a huge time difference between London and all time zones in the United States, thus making Wrestlemania a much different viewing experience than what we’re use too. However, I think the WWE owes it to the Brits too give them a show at a reasonable time. These fans stay up to ridiculous hours in the morning to watch RAW and other PPV’s. If they can do it, we can handle the show being earlier in the day. And that’s the only possible complaint I can think of, time zone issues. For once Wrestlemania would have to be shown at 12p.m. or 1p.m. for us Americans. And sure that would feel very different to the typical Sunday night feel…but we can handle it. Wembley Stadium should be hosting Wrestlemania 30!
