The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, an organization that monitors and attempts to prevent defamation against gays and lesbians in the media, have turned their attention to World Wrestling Entertainment, specifically Vince McMahon.
During the opening vignette on Raw celebrating Vince McMahon's birthday, McMahon remarked that the masks on a pair of "Cirque de Soliel" performers looked "pretty gay."
On their blog, GLAAD commented that while McMahon wasn't commenting on the sexuality of the two performers in general, "however, he used the term in a derogatory manner. It's just another example of how people throw around the word "gay" derisively. This came from the leader of a $500 million-plus organization who holds a lot of power in what he says and what he does.."
The organization, noting that WWE holds themselves up as a family-friendly entertainment form, has noted they have reached out to both WWE and the USA Network, which broadcast the comment.
