Brie Bella has decided to stop posting photographs of her children on social media after her son Buddy was targeted by an account beneath a family Halloween post.
Speaking on The Nikki & Brie Show, the WWE Hall of Famer said she deleted the photographs after discovering repeated comments and images mocking her youngest child. The account had no followers, followed nobody and did not have a profile picture, leading Brie to suspect it was a bot.
“It probably had 20 comments and images making fun of Buddy going after him,” she recalled. “So I deleted the post, and then that led me to all this bulls*it, you’re not going to see my kids anymore. I’m not going to post them anymore.”
The experience also left Brie concerned about children who have their own social media accounts. She encouraged parents to consider switching off comments to help protect younger users from harassment.
“What it showed me, and I really hope parents who, if you’re listening and you allow your child to have social media, don’t feel bad about it. A lot of people do,” Brie explained. “I think you should take comments off.”
Brie said it was particularly unsettling that the account appeared to focus on the youngest person in the family photographs. Although she could not confirm who was behind it, she questioned whether similar accounts could be targeting children elsewhere online.
“What I realized when I posted Buddy, I go, something targeted the youngest person in the photos,” Brie said. “Now, what I think is when young kids are posting, right, these middle schoolers and stuff, there could be bots going after them, it’s not real people.”
Brie explained that Buddy had not seen the comments, but she believed they could have been deeply upsetting if he had understood what was being said.
“Nobody saw those. That would have been devastating for him,” Brie explained. “And now Buddy’s six, he would have probably told you to f*ck off.”
The incident also made her think about her daughter Birdie and how difficult that kind of attention could be for a young teenager.
“I was thinking if it was Birdie who had Instagram, I was thinking about a 12-year-old or like a 14-year-old or even a 15-year-old dealing with this,” Brie said.
While acknowledging that families make different decisions about social media, Brie stood by her advice to limit the ways strangers can interact with children’s posts.
“I’m not going to fight you on that. I might debate you on why I think it’s wrong, but if you do, that’s fine,” Brie said. “But I think you should have no comments.”
