Reports suggesting Vince Russo held discussions about a possible return to WWE have reportedly caught several people within the company by surprise, with some influential figures said to be laughing off the idea.
According to Fightful Select, many WWE employees, including agents, producers, creative writers and members of the travelling production team, were completely unaware of any conversations between Russo and WWE President Nick Khan.
The speculation began after wrestling personality Conrad Thompson reported that Russo had been in discussions with Khan over the summer about potentially returning to WWE in a creative capacity.
While sources at WWE headquarters acknowledged hearing about conversations between the two, Fightful Select noted that it remains unclear just how serious those discussions became.
There were also suggestions that Russo may have visited WWE headquarters at some stage or was being considered for a visit, although the circumstances surrounding that possibility remain uncertain.
Interestingly, several individuals who work closely with Khan reportedly knew nothing about the situation until Thompson published his original report.
The reaction from others within WWE was equally telling, with some influential names reportedly “laughing it off” when the possibility of Russo returning was raised.
Thompson first revealed the discussions in his debut weekly column for Yahoo Sports, claiming Russo had spoken with Khan during the summer about a potential return to WWE's creative department.
However, when Thompson followed up on the situation several weeks ago, he was informed that the proposal had effectively “died on the vine.”
Despite the apparent lack of progress, Thompson suggested that Russo's controversial reputation, rather than his creative abilities, would likely be the biggest obstacle preventing WWE from bringing him back.
He also floated the possibility of Russo contributing to the company's creative direction remotely as a consultant, rather than returning to a full-time position.
Russo remains one of professional wrestling's most divisive creative figures, having served as WWF's head writer during the hugely successful Attitude Era.
His work during that period helped shape some of the company's most memorable television moments, although his subsequent creative decisions, particularly during his time with WCW, have continued to divide wrestling fans.
Russo departed WWF for WCW in October 1999 before briefly returning to WWE's creative team during the summer of 2002.
He later worked with TNA Wrestling and, more recently, Juggalo Championship Wrestling, which he departed in September 2026.
For now, there is no indication that WWE intends to move forward with bringing Russo back, and the reported conversations have not resulted in any publicly announced agreement.
WWE has yet to comment on the claims made by Thompson or the subsequent Fightful Select report.
The developments also come amid separate reports suggesting longtime WWE creative executive Bruce Prichard could step away from his current responsibilities following WrestleMania 43, potentially bringing further changes behind the scenes.
Whether Russo's name was simply discussed as an option or whether a more substantial return was genuinely considered remains unknown.
