Dave Meltzer Says WWE Crown Jewel Still Expected To Go Ahead In Riyadh

WWE is still expected to take Crown Jewel to Riyadh on November 7, with Dave Meltzer reporting that only a major development is likely to change those plans.

The event has faced questions amid further U.S. government travel warnings concerning Saudi Arabia. TKO’s Ari Emanuel recently said the company is reviewing the situation daily, but “nothing has been canceled”.

Speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Meltzer gave his latest assessment.

"Unless something happens, catastrophic, between now and next Tuesday, they're going," he explained.

Meltzer has previously pointed to the financial incentives behind keeping Crown Jewel in Riyadh. He also believes protecting plans for WrestleMania 43 in the city is a factor.

He discussed travel arrangements for those involved in Canelo Álvarez’s boxing match this weekend, saying many had flown into Bahrain before making a five-hour drive to Riyadh. According to people he had spoken with, security had been very good.

As for which executives might accompany WWE, Meltzer suggested Nick Khan could travel, but said he did not expect Emanuel or TKO’s board of directors to attend. He made clear that he did not know Khan’s plans.

"Ari is the one making the choice and he's probably too busy to go, unless he's got some meetings there. I doubt he would go. I mean, I don't know if Nick would go or not and it's immaterial, it's not his choice. ... Vince wasn't on the plane with the rest of them, either, when they were held hostage. He got out of town on his own plane."

Meltzer’s “held hostage” description referred to the previous Saudi Arabia travel incident involving WWE talent. That wording reflects his characterisation of the situation.

He also noted that WWE returned to Saudi Arabia months after that incident and previously staged Tribute to the Troops events in war zones under Vince McMahon.

For now, Meltzer’s assessment is that Crown Jewel remains on course for Riyadh, unless circumstances change significantly.
