Jake Hager has undergone a second eye operation after doctors discovered a detached retina following his Power Slap injury last month.
The encouraging news is that the urgent surgery went better than expected, according to an October 23 update from Slap News, which has been in contact with his fiancée, Patricia Blackburn.
Hager had been attending weekly check-ups after his initial emergency operation. As blood in his eye cleared, doctors were able to assess the damage more clearly and identified the detached retina.
“As the blood in Jake Hager’s eye began to clear, doctors discovered in his weekly follow-up that his retina was detached,” Slap News wrote. “He underwent urgent surgery to reattach it, which doctors said went better than expected.”
Dave Meltzer reported earlier this month that Hager had started to regain some sight in the injured eye, although further surgery remained a possibility.
The injury happened during Hager’s TKO defeat to Johnny Magna, his second consecutive Power Slap loss. Hager was left bleeding from the eye, with Dana White describing it as one of the worst injuries he had seen in either UFC or Power Slap.
Before the second operation, Blackburn said Hager’s appointments had been “really promising.” Any return to competition will depend on his recovery and medical advice.
“The expectation of him returning to compete, that decision is going to be based on his recovery and what the doctors say,” Blackburn noted.
Hager, 44, is familiar to wrestling fans from his WWE run as Jack Swagger and his time in AEW. His sporting background also includes MMA, college football and amateur wrestling.
