A famous piece of WrestleMania history has fetched a record price at auction.
The WWF Intercontinental Championship belt Ricky Steamboat won from Randy Savage at WrestleMania III sold for $716,750 at Heritage Auctions on Saturday, October 24. The sale sets a new auction record for a wrestling championship belt.
The winning bid was $587,500, with Heritage’s 22 percent buyer’s premium bringing the total to $716,750.
Conrad Thompson, who owned the belt, celebrated the result on X.
“We set a record! Thank you!”
The sale comfortably surpassed the previous record of $414,800, set on August 21 by Hulk Hogan’s WWF Championship belt, which had been photo-matched to WrestleMania 2.
Hogan still holds the overall wrestling memorabilia record. His boots from the first WrestleMania sold for $1,037,000 earlier this year, becoming the first wrestling item to break the $1 million mark.
According to Heritage’s listing, the Intercontinental Championship belt was used between 1985 and 1988 and held by four WWE Hall of Famers: Tito Santana, Randy Savage, Ricky Steamboat and The Honky Tonk Man. Featuring the red WWF logo, it measures 48.5 inches from end to end.
Its history includes one of WrestleMania’s most celebrated matches. Savage defeated Santana for the championship in February 1986 and held it for more than a year before Steamboat beat him at WrestleMania III on March 29, 1987, at the Pontiac Silverdome in Michigan.
The Honky Tonk Man then defeated Steamboat for the title in June 1987.
Thompson has previously explained that he acquired the belt through a trade with Vince McMahon in 2020. Following the death of inaugural Intercontinental Champion Pat Patterson, McMahon wanted Patterson’s original championship belt, which Thompson owned.
Thompson offered to exchange it for the WrestleMania III belt, bringing the historic title into his collection.
