Ric Flair has offered high praise for Tony Khan, suggesting the AEW boss “may be the greatest promoter of all time” while opening up about the support he receives from him.
Speaking with Biff Poggi of NewsNation, Flair said Khan continues to look after him despite his limited appearances for AEW. The wrestling legend believes that generosity comes from Khan’s respect for his career.
“He’s a nice guy, he’s generous. I work for him, and I don’t do anything,” Flair said. “I think he takes care of me out of respect for me. He grew up on me. He’s just a wonderful guy.”
The conversation also covered WWE, with Flair questioning the departures of people who played an important part in his time with the company. He suggested some employees are “kind of hanging onto their job” following the cuts.
“[WWE has] fired so many people that were an intricate part of my career when I was there. I don’t understand the rhyme or reason for it,” Flair said.
He pointed to the team behind his Peacock documentary as an example, saying two of the people involved had been fired.
Flair stressed that WWE has always treated him well. With his daughter Charlotte Flair still working there, he said he does not speak negatively about the company. However, he admitted he is unsure who has the final say under TKO.
“I think Nick Khan is pretty much the boss over there, but at the same time, I don’t know how much power Nick Khan has. He used to be the man,” Flair said. “But, you know, Hunter is the booker now, or the head of creative they call it.”
When asked about who makes the political decisions in wrestling, Flair returned to Khan and his approach to running AEW.
“Tony has a group of people, which I’m sure they do at WWE, that he circles up with. And Tony does it right there. Tony Khan may be the greatest promoter of all time,” Flair said.
Poggi then asked whether Flair meant wrestling specifically or any industry.
“I’m saying in wrestling,” Flair said. “He may not be as smart as Vince McMahon, but only through, you know, years and years. Because Vince was really smart and very clever. But Tony’s a great guy, generous to a fault.”
Flair has been signed to AEW since 2023. The company announced his multi-year contract on November 2 that year, alongside a sponsorship agreement making Wooooo! Energy its exclusive energy drink.
His arrival tied into Sting’s retirement run, which concluded at Revolution 2024. Flair has made only occasional appearances since.
The 77-year-old, a two-time WWE Hall of Famer and 16-time world champion, also dismissed speculation about a WWE return last month, stating that he remains “Very Loyal” to Khan.
