WWE’s plans for Crown Jewel remain uncertain despite reports that Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport reopened on Sunday.
The event is scheduled for November 7, but conflicting reports about airport operations and continued disruption to international flights have left questions over travel to the Saudi capital.
The airport had been closed since the previous Saturday. Saudi coalition officials said on Thursday that it had been targeted 20 times this month, with 17 people killed and 333 injured.
Some news outlets continued to report that the airport was closed. However, FlightStats listed 113 scheduled arrivals for Sunday, mainly domestic services, while Flightera showed at least one international passenger flight had landed. Several international airlines are still suspending flights to Riyadh.
The situation has already affected other major sporting events following increased attacks by the Iran-backed Houthi rebel group.
The Six Kings Slam tennis tournament, which forms part of Riyadh Season, has moved from October 21–24 to December 27–30. The UCI Urban Cycling World Championships, scheduled for November 3–7 in Riyadh, have been cancelled.
Meanwhile, Canelo Alvarez’s boxing match against Christian Mbilli on October 31 is still expected to go ahead.
Turki Alalshikh recently said on social media that Alvarez had contacted him and confirmed his intention to fight in Riyadh. According to Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, WWE sources believe that public commitment has increased the pressure on TKO to keep its own events in place.
Meltzer wrote:
“Sources within WWE concurred that tweet put even more pressure on TKO not to cancel its two planned shows. I can’t say everyone of course, but everyone that I have been in contact with after this past week would rather not go there right now. In the past, going to Saudi Arabia was “optional,” in a sense that one would not be punished financially for not going, but at times there have been people told if they voluntarily choose not to go, it’s fine, except they may have to drop championships or have pushes toned down.”
At the time of the report, WWE had not announced any plans to postpone, reschedule or relocate Crown Jewel.
