WWE is reportedly unhappy that some employees have raised concerns about travelling to Saudi Arabia for Crown Jewel, with Dave Meltzer claiming the company wants to present a united front ahead of the event.
Speaking on Thursdayâs Wrestling Observer Radio, Meltzer said the concerns had come from non-wrestling staff. His comments about possible repercussions for wrestlers were his own assessment.
âI heard that WWE wasnât thrilled that some of the employees, non-wrestlers, did actually talk about not wanting to go because they want that united front,â Meltzer said. âAnd not one wrestler said a word, which doesnât surprise me because if they did, there would be repercussions. Itâd be stupid to do so. Itâs not your fight. But I would expect that they canât be thrilled about this.â
Crown Jewel remains scheduled for Saturday, November 7, at Riyadh Season Stadium. WWE has not announced a change of venue, and Mondayâs Raw promoted two champion versus champion matches.
World Heavyweight Champion Roman Reigns is set to face Undisputed WWE Champion Sami Zayn, while Womenâs World Champion Liv Morgan is scheduled to take on WWE Womenâs Champion Chelsea Green.
Meltzer also claimed WWE has a contingency plan, but suggested the company is reluctant to acknowledge it publicly because of its relationship with its Saudi partners.
âThey will not even publicly say that thereâs a backup plan, there is, but they canât publicly say it because if they publicly say it, it sounds like theyâre wavering on going,â Meltzer said. âAnd they canât have that out because then the Saudis and Turki will be very upset at them for having that out. Thatâs why no one talks about the idea of a backup plan, and they deny it. But to not have a backup plan, you would have to be incompetent, and if there is anything that the people that run WWE are, incompetent is not one of those things.â
Reports about alternative arrangements have differed. Bryan Alvarez reported on Tuesday that âRiyadh is still the plan for Crown Jewel,â while adding that there is âa backup city in the US that is on the table.â
PWInsider Elite, however, reported that WWE had not held conversations about moving the event. A WWE source also denied that a backup venue in Europe had been secured.
The concerns follow a September report from Fightful Select, which described âa large concern within WWEâ about Crown Jewel. Several people who regularly travel to Saudi Arabia for WWE shows had reportedly asked whether plans could change.
The wider situation in Riyadh has also drawn attention. Following attacks at King Khalid International Airport on October 10, the U.S. Embassy advised Americans to avoid the airport.
Meanwhile, the Six Kings Slam tennis exhibition has been postponed from October 21 to 24 until December 27 to 30. Saudi General Entertainment Authority chairman Turki Alalshikh cited âorganisational and logistical challengesâ without mentioning the attacks.
Alalshikh has said the Canelo Alvarez versus Christian Mbilli boxing match will still take place in Riyadh on October 31.
For Crown Jewel, the announced location and advertised matches remain in place, despite the reported concerns and conflicting accounts of contingency plans.
