Wren Sinclair pulled off a surprise on the October 6 episode of WWE NXT, winning a 20-woman battle royal while disguised as Lady Shani to secure a shot at Kelani Jordan’s NXT Women’s Championship.

The reigning WWE Speed Women’s Champion had been suspended after attacking Jordan and putting her hands on a referee. That appeared to rule her out of the match to determine Jordan’s challenger at Halloween Havoc, but Sinclair found a way into the ring behind a mask.

Before the reveal, the battle royal delivered plenty of drama.

Izzi Dame’s night ended early when Zaria sent her over the top rope. Furious at her elimination, Dame attempted to return to the ring and attack Zaria. Security and officials intervened, restraining her before taking her backstage.

The match also saw eliminations for Layla Diggs, Skylar Raye, Adelicious, Chantel Monroe, Arianna Grace, M By Elegance, Heather By Elegance, Ivy Nile, Reina Volcan, Nikkita Lyons, Zaria, Xia Brookside and Indi Hartwell.

As the action moved towards its conclusion, Kiana James, La Catalina, Armstrong and Lizzy Rain appeared to be the final four competitors. James and Catalina were eliminated, leaving Rain and Armstrong battling for what they believed was the championship opportunity.

Rain connected with a cutter before both women went over the top rope. Each managed to hold on, keeping their hopes alive as they traded blows in a precarious position.

Armstrong eventually knocked Rain out of the match and climbed onto the ropes to celebrate, believing she had booked her place at Halloween Havoc.

But the celebration came too soon.

Lady Shani was still in the match and pushed Armstrong off the ropes to claim the victory. The masked winner then revealed her identity, removing the disguise to expose Sinclair underneath.

Despite her suspension, Sinclair was announced as the winner and the new number-one contender for the NXT Women’s Championship. On commentary, Vic Joseph highlighted the unusual circumstances and reminded viewers that she remained suspended.

Jordan watched from the platform as Sinclair celebrated in the ring, leaving the champion with an unexpected challenger heading towards Halloween Havoc.
