Will Ospreay is heading to AEW WrestleDream with the World Championship and a challenge he designed himself.
Ospreay defeated Kazuchika Okada in the main event of Grand Slam France on October 6, retaining his title and confirming his place in the Clockwork Carnage match on October 17.
The longtime rivals traded some of their biggest moves before Ospreay landed the Hidden Blade to secure a clean victory. The contest ended with a show of respect, as Ospreay bowed to Okada and received a thumbs-up and a handshake in return.
Now, the champion’s attention turns to a very different kind of title defence.
Created by Ospreay, Clockwork Carnage will feature eight wrestlers entering at three-minute intervals. Once all eight competitors are in the match, a 15-minute countdown will begin. Whoever scores the most falls during that period will leave as AEW World Champion.
The format gives Ospreay plenty to think about. Beating one challenger will not be enough, with the championship decided by who can collect the most falls against a field of opponents before time expires.
Ospreay and Samoa Joe are the first two confirmed participants. Joe booked his place by defeating Jack Perry at Grand Slam France, while Ospreay’s successful defence against Okada secured his spot.
With six places still to be filled, the full scale of Ospreay’s next challenge is taking shape. He may have created Clockwork Carnage, but mastering its rules with the championship at stake will be another matter.
