Vince Russo has clarified that his recent comments about The Rock were never intended as criticism of Brian Gewirtz.
Speaking on The Coach and Bro Show on October 5, the former WWE writer addressed suggestions that he had an issue with Gewirtz, who became a close creative partner of Dwayne Johnson in wrestling and Hollywood.
Russo explained that his own conversations with Gewirtz had been positive, including when he approached him with ideas a few years ago.
“Bro, I wanna say this. I wanna make this clear. When I was telling that story about The Rock, there’s no heat with Brian at all. As a matter of fact, I had a couple of things to pitch a couple of years ago. I was talking to Brian, and he was very, very nice and respectful. I wanna make that clear, man. It was never a Brian thing at all.”
The clarification follows Russo’s recent claim that he has never watched a Rock film because he feels his contribution to Johnson’s early WWE character has not received enough recognition.
During those remarks, Russo compared his experience with Gewirtz’s continued working relationship with The Rock. That comparison prompted some fans to interpret his comments as criticism of Gewirtz.
Russo has now made clear that his frustration concerns the recognition he believes he deserves, while stressing that Gewirtz treated him with kindness and respect.
