WWE is reportedly pressing ahead with plans to hold Crown Jewel and WrestleMania 43 in Saudi Arabia, despite security concerns and a U.S. travel advisory.
The U.S. State Department advises Americans to “Reconsider travel” to the country. The risks listed include potential Iranian drone and missile attacks targeting American interests, armed conflict, terrorism, exit bans and local laws covering social media activity.
According to Dave Meltzer of F4WOnline, WWE wants both events to go ahead and would likely leave any announcement about withdrawing until as late as possible.
“They are not going to even hint at a pullout decision until they make it. Obviously they want to do both shows there because it’s a ton of money. So in both cases they will wait until the last possible time to announce a pull-out and they will do everything to avoid it. I mean, if it’s super dangerous to go, they aren’t going, but they still won’t say so until the latest time possible.”
Meltzer reported that November’s Crown Jewel is worth approximately $60 million, while WrestleMania is expected to generate well over $100 million.
Cancelling and rescheduling Crown Jewel could be an option, but that would affect revenue WWE expects to receive in the fourth quarter. There is more time before WrestleMania 43 next year, meaning circumstances could change considerably before that event.
Las Vegas has been mentioned as a possible alternative for WrestleMania, although Meltzer’s sources in the city reportedly suggested that the necessary April dates are unavailable. They also indicated that Las Vegas cannot offer the same level of financial incentives it has provided for previous events.
