Eric Bischoff believes WWE could give wrestling’s old territory system a fresh start on an international scale.
Speaking on his 83 Weeks podcast, the former WCW president pointed to WWE’s approach with AAA as a model that could work in other countries. Rather than launching a new NXT brand in Mexico, WWE has built on an established promotion with its own identity and audience.
Bischoff suggested a similar approach could create opportunities in Japan, India, the UK and Germany, with Ireland potentially adding some regional rivalry.
“Well, if you’ve got that in Japan and you’ve got that in India, if you’ve got that in the UK, if you’ve got that in Germany…you could do one in Ireland probably, you know, and get a little bit of rivalry going on. These are smaller promotions that are promoting locally and developing that contact with the market… because the touring allows you to connect with your audience in a real way that nothing else can. And it allows you to build on that audience.
“I think a version of the old territory system, with a franchise model attached to it, in these various strong markets for wrestling, I think you could have a lot of fun with that.”
His proposal centres on local promotions building strong relationships with fans through touring, while operating within a wider franchise structure.
For now, this is Bischoff’s vision for what WWE could explore, rather than an announced expansion plan.
