Zelina Vega Remembers Her Father on the 25th Anniversary of 9/11

Zelina Vega Remembers Her Father on the 25th Anniversary of 9/11

Zelina Vega has shared a heartfelt tribute to her father, Michael Angel Trinidad, as the world marks 25 years since the September 11 attacks.

The former WWE star, now wrestling as Xelina, posted an emotional video reflecting on her loss and asking for help from anyone who knew him. Michael was working for Cantor Fitzgerald on the 103rd floor of the World Trade Center when he died in the attacks in 2001.

Vega, whose real name is Thea Trinidad, was just 10 years old. A quarter of a century later, she says she can no longer remember the sound of her father’s voice.

She appealed to anyone with video footage of him to get in touch. She also welcomed stories from those who knew him, hoping to learn more about the person he was beyond her childhood memories of him as her dad.

“As a 10 year old, I knew that I had the best dad in the world,” Vega said. “Going to wrestling events at Madison Square Garden with my brother. I remember he [Vega’s father] had gotten me my first Hardy Boyz shirt. I remember watching WWF, WCW events, like, VHS tapes at his house. And it’s what made me want to become a wrestler myself. Because it’s the one thing that I felt super connected. And I think that’s all I’ve ever been looking for, is a way to still be connected to him years and years later.”

Their shared love of wrestling continues to shape her career. Michael competed in amateur wrestling at high school, and his favourite professional wrestler was The Rock. Being able to speak with The Rock about her father has become another meaningful way for Vega to honour his memory.

In 2025, after winning the WWE Women’s United States Championship, she visited the 9/11 Memorial and placed the title belt on her father’s name. She also shared her memories of him in a WWE video released in 2018, explaining how her wrestling journey has helped keep their connection alive.

This anniversary comes during a difficult year for Vega. She and her husband, Malakai Black, were released from WWE in April following WrestleMania 42, and she has also experienced other personal losses.

Since returning to the ring as Xelina, she has appeared for House of Glory and PROGRESS Wrestling. Her father, her family and the fans who continue to support her remain at the heart of her motivation.

She still hopes to bring a world championship to the 9/11 Memorial in her father’s honour, regardless of which promotion it comes from.

Readers are welcome to leave a message of support for Xelina and everyone remembering a loved one today.
