Jackson Drake survived a determined challenge from Tavion Heights to retain the NXT North American Championship on the September 8 episode of WWE NXT.
Making his first title defence since defeating Myles Borne at Heatwave on August 30, Drake faced a challenger eager to bounce back from a difficult few weeks. Heights entered the match following his championship losses at Heatwave and an attack by his former tag team partner, Borne.
Heights used his power to take control early, landing a back body drop and shoulder block before targeting Drake’s leg. An ankle lock left the champion struggling, but Drake kicked his way free and briefly removed his boot and kickpad to relieve the discomfort.
The challenger kept attacking the leg until Drake created an opening at ringside, driving Heights’ arm into the ring post.
Both men fought hard to gain the advantage. Heights delivered another back body drop and a mat slam, while Drake responded with a deadlift German suplex. Heights then caught a kick to the chest and sent the champion crashing onto the apron with a German suplex of his own.
Several nearfalls followed as Heights continued targeting Drake’s foot. However, the champion fought back with a heavy knee strike before climbing to the top rope and landing a 450 Splash for the victory.
Drake’s first successful defence was followed by another tense moment for Heights, as Borne appeared through the crowd.
Heights initially seemed pleased to see his former partner, but his expression soon changed. With their recent history clearly weighing on him, he left the ring as Borne watched.
Drake leaves with his championship reign intact, while Heights still has unfinished business with the man who betrayed him.
