The professional wrestling world is mourning the loss of respected wrestler, trainer and promoter Jerry Oates, who has passed away at the age of 81.

Oates’ family confirmed the sad news in a heartfelt statement:

“It is with heavy hearts that the family of Jerry Oates announces his passing.

“Born in Columbus, Georgia, Jerry lived a full and impactful life marked by his passion for professional wrestling, fitness, and service to his community. From 1970 to 2010, he enjoyed a distinguished career as a professional wrestler. He owned and operated the Oates Gym, a cornerstone of the Columbus fitness community for more than two decades. He also promoted bodybuilding and wrestling events and later served as a deputy with the Tybee Island Police Department and the Muscogee County Sheriff’s Office. Jerry touched countless lives through his strength, generosity, and enduring spirit.

“A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 12. Details to follow.”

Born in Columbus, Georgia, Oates entered professional wrestling during the early 1970s after being trained by his brother-in-law, Dick Steinborn.

Known for his technical ability, Oates competed across several National Wrestling Alliance territories and also appeared for All Japan Pro Wrestling. He frequently teamed with his brother, Ted Oates, and the pair captured the NWA Georgia Tag Team Championship and the All Asia Tag Team Championship.

Jerry also enjoyed success as a singles competitor, winning championships in both Central States Wrestling and Pacific Northwest Wrestling.

His other notable tag team accomplishments included holding the NWA National Tag Team Championship alongside Ronnie Garvin, the Pacific Northwest Tag Team Championship with Jesse Ventura and the Central States Tag Team Championship with Mike George.

Oates continued giving back to professional wrestling away from the ring. He became a trainer and helped future WWE star Marty Jannetty begin his career. He also promoted Great Championship Wrestling in the Columbus area.

Outside wrestling, Oates made a lasting contribution to his community through the Oates Gym and his service in law enforcement.
