Jim Ross is hoping to return to the AEW commentary desk at All Out on September 26, provided his recovery continues to move in the right direction.

The 74-year-old underwent successful brain surgery on August 12. Doctors later advised him not to travel to London for AEW All In because of concerns about his balance and the possibility of suffering a fall far from home.

All Out will take place in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, near Chicago. Ross believes the shorter journey from Oklahoma City will make his return much more manageable.

“It’s in the cards. If I continue to improve at the rate that I currently am, no doubt about it,” Ross said on his Grilling JR podcast.

“Because it’s a non-stop flight from OKC to Chicago. I’m not flying to London. I’m flying a short hop, so to speak. Two hours. And to me, that’s a pretty short hop.

“I’ve made it very known that I want to return to help on some of the main events as soon as I’m able to travel better. As far as just looking at the match, interpreting what I see, and articulating it, I could do that now. But they’re worried about my falling and they want me to get a little bit more steady on my feet.”

Ross underwent a shunt procedure to remove excess fluid from his brain. However, he is also recovering from broken toes after falling at home on the morning of his surgery. He currently has to wear a walking boot, which has affected his balance.

“If my broken toes aren’t an issue, then I’m going to be there,” Ross said about All Out.

“I don’t want to say that Tony Khan expects me to be there, he wants me to be there if I’m able. He’s been great with my sickness. Never a negative call.”

Ross also praised AEW All In, calling it the best pay-per-view or television show the company has produced. He particularly wished he could have called the AEW World Championship match between Will Ospreay and Kenny Omega.

When Conrad Thompson said he would have enjoyed hearing Ross call the match, the veteran commentator revealed that Tony Khan felt the same way.

“Well, Tony Khan agrees with you, Conrad,” Ross said. “So thanks to you both, especially him because he writes the checks.”

Ross also had kind words for the commentary team and singled out Excalibur for the way he handled the broadcast.

“I was really proud of how those guys did,” Ross said.

Ross currently provides commentary for selected matches at AEW pay-per-view events. If his recovery remains on course, fans could hear his famous voice again when AEW arrives in the Chicago area later this month.
