WWE has officially called time on its Speed Championships, bringing the short-lived title era to an end.

The decision was confirmed during Tuesday night’s episode of NXT, where Zaria was forced to make a choice following her recent title unification victory.

Zaria ultimately decided to keep the WWE Women’s North American Championship, meaning she would give up the Women’s Speed Championship.

NXT General Manager Robert Stone then revealed that the decision would have consequences for the men’s division as well, confirming that the WWE Speed Championship would also be retired.

Lexis King, who was alongside the rest of Birthright during the segment, was forced to relinquish his Speed Championship. King was clearly unhappy with the situation but eventually handed over the title and walked away.

It officially brings the Speed Championship era to a close.

Zaria had defeated Wren Sinclair at NXT Heatwave to unify the Women’s North American and Women’s Speed Championships.

Kali Armstrong was also involved in the match after earning her place by pinning Zaria on the previous episode of NXT.

The Speed Championships were originally created for WWE Speed, a short-form wrestling programme that streamed exclusively on X.

WWE Speed launched in April 2024, with Ricochet becoming the inaugural WWE Speed Champion and Candice LeRae later becoming the first WWE Women’s Speed Champion.

The concept featured matches with strict time limits, giving WWE something noticeably different from its regular weekly programming.

New episodes continued until July before the programme quietly disappeared without an official explanation.

Rather than immediately abandoning the championships, WWE eventually moved them across to NXT, where they became a regular part of the brand.

Tournaments were initially used to determine new challengers, although that format became less prominent in recent months as championship opportunities began being awarded without tournaments.

Now, more than two years after WWE first introduced the Speed concept, both championships have officially been retired.
